Water in gasoline question.

For the heck of it, I replaced the low tension wire on the coil. Valves are bit bit noisy at loose .010" gap but car
starts easily and holds 900 rpm warm idle. A few misc. muffled backfires.

Wendy did a video but it is with a new camera we are trying
to figure how to download the video.

Anyway. Today the car really pulled strong. I took it to
4,000 rmp twice (bad Dale) No backfires with my foot in it.
I let off the gas and I get backfires. I punch it, the carbs
with Ratco linkage respond instantly. Let off- backfires.

I;ll post the video as soon as I can.

A great improvement to the car today. Paul, I found 2 valves
kinda tight.

thanks all. Maybe this data helps diagnose the problem.

Well, that's progress. You can tweak the loose valves a bit and cut the noise down after you get some miles on it.

4,000rpms should not be a problem at all.

If you are getting a backfiring when letting the gas after hard acceleration that could be a couple of things that you can tweak out following the steps in the Buckeye carb adjusting file that I'm sure you have.

I'd just drive it and enjoy it for a while. Take a break and tweak it in later.

Glad you got the car back up and running. It sounded like an electrical problem to me. A bad wire or loose connection can be hard to find and cause all kinds of problems. Might be time to forget about the car for awhile and go enjoy the boat and catch dinner. No need for the crusher today.

After reading Dale's posts about water in the gas, et al, I felt bad about my languishing TR6; 4 months without a run, never mind a start. Tightened the quick-start battery connector, primed the mechanical fuel pump, and hit the ignition switch. It started as though it was run yesterday...

Tool her out for a nice 60 minute run. It looks like heck, but runs great. Thanks, Dale, for the motivation, and glad yours is running well again!

Here is the video of this afternoon's test drive around the hood.
Taken with brand new camera with "anti-shake" built into the video.
Good thing or there'd be no image to view.

No backfires with my foot in it. Backfires coasting of slowing down.

Here's the video- can anyone hear anything real bad?
I've got another video of the engine running with VC off.

The TR6 mountain drive video will be taken in 2 weeks
when the Mrs gets home from a visit to New England.

A huge big thank you to Mr Steed and Mr Kopf who got
rid of the engine backfires. A quick 100 miles while
the Mrs is away, re-adjust everything to spec and
I'm good to go up in the hills where the GPS and Cells
don't work.

Moutain drive video to follow.

Yee Haw !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time to enjoy, never give up. Glad you got the car run as it should. You will be the expert next time.

You are the grasshopper that grabbed the pebble from his masters hand. Congratulations on the fruition of hard work. Can't wait to see the new and any video. I have always hoped to vacation in Puerto Rico and there's a chance that I will make it this March. What part are you in?

Dale,

My inquiring mind wants to know, what was the issue with the backfire.

The motor sounds great. Enjoy

After I installed the new rocker arm shaft and refurbished everything,
adjusted the rocker gaps, the car would not start. Cranked well but
would not start. Finally started but backfired horrible.

In the past week I have installed two complete ignition systems.
coils, plugs, plug wires, points, condensers, and even a Pertronix
electronic ignition. All components twice. 3X if you count the
Pertronix that did not start the car.

Backfire was still fierce.

The car did not run well enough to check the plugs for mixture
so I did the best I could using Bentley. I got the car around the hood
and posted the video. Backfires and all.

Mr. Steed and Mr. Kopf suggested the problem was carb mixture not ignition.

Pulled a plug from front carb(white), pulled a plug from rear carb(oily black)

With my TRF twizzle stick, I leaned out rear carb 1/3 turn and riched
up front carb by 1/3 turn. Car runs great. Toasty brown plugs.

I sure have lots of spare ignition systems and components. LOL

best regards,

dale </span>
