Watch out if you have one of these

Looks like a simple enough device, sweet, innocent. Well took my 6 out for an evening cruise and all of a sudden I could not turn left, and almost hit a curb. Pulled off the road to find that the thin metal broke just to the left of the knob and 1/2 the assembly fell next to the steering rod and wedged in next to the flexible couplers. What a stupid thing, and could have caused an accident.

Re: fdg

I bought one of those from him last year and it works just fine. Price was right at $2.95.

Re: fdg

left of the knob the metal is thin and broke off while driving. Nothing else was done to it, maybe a freak occurrance.

Weird. I've had one on several of my cars for years with no issues.

Re: fdg

I do believe it might have been a freak occurance. I've had these on all seven of my cars for years and never had anything like that happen. You do have to remove them once in a while and clean the connection, but other then that, they seem to work great. I will double check mine again, just in case.

Re: fdg

I just broke mine the other day in the same spot , VERY TRUE!!!!

but it also just ordered another one, beats paying 165+- for a Lucus one....hmmm maby not!

Re: fdg

FWIW, I run my negative battery cable inside the battery hold down for just this reason. That keeps the cable from falling into the steering if something happens to it.

I started doing this after it fell and fouled the steering one time when I was moving the car with the battery disconnected.

Well, now that you state what happened, this deserves a closer look. I just had mine on and off several times in the last few weeks and never noticed anything, but then it was just an R&R to get the battery out. I wasn't really looking for anything...until now.

Thanks, Roof!

Re: fdg

I guess 6's ground to the engine block... 3s & 4s ground to the chassis with a very short cable so that guy isn't going to stray far.

In any case, I find it convenient to just slip the ground cable on snug enough to pull it off w/o loosening the clamp bolt. Doesn't seem to create any charging issues or starting problems.

Re: fdg

I got 2 of them off eBay and installed them on two Spitfires. One of them has corroded all to heck in two different places.

Re: fdg

I've had a bunch of these, and one broke at the same place when I was putting it on a car. I don't think I have any on any of my cars anymore.

Re: fdg

I'm with Sammy, those things are junk. I keep a shifting spanner handy to pop the ground cable off the battery.

Re: fdg

Isn't this the Moss "Battery Cut-Off Switch"? #145-795 - $13.95

Wonder if they know about this.

Re: fdg

I got a handful of 'em out of a "tent tools" pitch for a buck apiece. Figger'd they looked cheesy, but fer a buck, why not try 'em... I likely won't leave the ONE fitted (MGB) on as a permanant deal but it does make it convenient for all the rewiring/testing/fiddling as I put the car back together.

Re: fdg

Those are in the Elans. Not sure yet where I'd mount it in the MGB.

Re: fdg

If the green knob falls off while driving,
why does the car engine not immediately stop?

I'm a little confused here.

Re: fdg

errrrr - where'd you hear the green knob fell off?
