Followed a Plymouth Horizon in remarkable good shape. Can't think of the last time I saw one AND it had British Columbia plates (explains the condition) but who is brave enough to drive a Horizon across Canada? not me!

Is it just me or is it a bad sign when we start taking notice of cars like Plymouth Horizons?
There's a guy here in town with a pristine Chevette. I remember seeing it the first time, and thinking "Wow, that looks pretty good. AGGGH!! What Am I saying?!?!?!"

We used to have an older guy who lived down the street,
he had an early Tercel,in excellent condition.Of course it
was the plain jane 2 door post type body.
Why is it that some of the best survivors are the worst
body styles?

Mot sure I completely agree - I think it's more that we notice cause they're the only survivors /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Sis had a Plymouth Horizon way back when and all I can say is that it had to be the most vanilla & mundane vehicle I've ever been in. Bout the only good think I can say about it was that it made my girlfriend’s AMC Pacer with it’s fishbowl design look down right exotic.

We actually had one also - got about 140km out of it - still ran though needed a ring job when we finally sold - did abuse it terribly though - railway ties on top etc. -

About a mile and a half from my house sits a Gremlin for sale. Looks to be about the color of week-old baked beans. Also looks to be the original paint job. Seriously, what WERE we thinking?

Dodge/Plymoth Horizon...a VW Golf in Chrysler clothing! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

It was actually a really bad copy of the Rabbit, but
it's still insulting...

Actually there's quite a following of that platform. I had a Dodge Rampage that is basically a Pick-Up variation of the same front drive Horizon/Omni platform. Same with the Daytona & Charger from the same era. Heck even Shelby had a hand in some interesting special street fighters.

Still larger variations of the same transverse axle design layout gave us the K-cars like the Aries, Reliant and LeBarron coupe & convertible. That in turn led to a wide array of other Chrysler FWD vehicles. Including the ground breaking Minivan that they became so famous for, along with Dodge Intrepid, Plymouth Concord and FWD Chrysler 300D own homage to the lowly Plymouth Horizon.

Maybe not Chrysler’s finest hour – but a significant impact on the motoring public.

?

I know that the Grassroots Motorsports $200? challenge had a run on Horizons etc winning - in part because of the Turbos, and in part because the cars were SO cheap they could afford Go Fast parts

Last summer I read an article on "where are they now" cars that used to be everywhere but now are gone - Pinto/ Vega/ Citation/ Hyundai Pony (Canada)/ Horizon etc. all the "disposable cars"

Funnily enough I saw every car on the list within 7 days of reading the article - in part I'm sure because it reminded me, mostly because, as a car guy, I'm always looking!

A while back I saw a Chevrolet Vega driving through downtown Akron - in the middle of winter! Looked to be in pretty good shape, too, regardless of how much was Bondo and how much was metal. I had to do a double take since I hadn't seen a real one before.

I also saw a Yugo a couple months ago (a very riced one), and almost had to laugh because 1. I couldn't remember the last time I saw a Yugo. 2. It was a Yugo with a spoiler, big exhaust, and ground effects.

The earlier Horizons did actually have the Rabbit engine, I believe with a Chrysler head, so it could be called a cloned Rabbit!!

Actually this little French thing-a-ma-jig may have been the primordial wabbit.

Here is a really cool ORIGINAL racer with pedigree for sale cheap...Yea I've been thinking A LOT about it /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Don't do it Dave!!!

They purposely left out the under-bonnet pix. It's hampster power'd and IMPOSSIBLE to work on.

"Although I haven't started the car in a couple years, the engine does run. It was factory modified with a special carb."

The original was a thimble-sized Solex. Pro'lly put a Carter 1bbl on it.

...and besides, it's FRENCH... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Thanks Doc.....As usual you have come through with reason.

It's the pedigree racer thing that got me all misty eyed.

Scott Harvey was actually a somebody in the rally circuit.

And it'd be a hoot, having having something to say, when all the vintage blow hards start their flossing over X-this or X-that.

I did find a interview where Harvey referred to the Simca as being the low point in his career.
(He used other words /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif & referred directly to THIS car/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/yesnod.gif)

I had one of them "French thingies"!! A'71. Really kind of ahead of its time!! It was comfortable and fairly dependable! Simca...is that a "Simulated Car" contraction? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I think you should keep interested. I've seen it too and the pedigree is worth something (Not money obviously /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif ). Besides since when could ANYONE on this forum council someone else to avoid a car because it's underpowered/ prone to rust/ ugly/ poorly constructed or obscure - dang, that's what we do! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif
