Wedge Wanted: TR7 Front Spoiler, I think.

The '81 TR7 I have has nothing under the front bumper. Not being real familiar with the TR7, I thought it needed something. Then the VB catalog showed up today. There's what I needed! That spoiler under the front bumper of the glorious yellow TR8 is just the ticket.

So I browse the book in the "reading room" and see a fiberglass one (that's my gig!!!) for $170. My guess is that it's as thick as egg shells. The ones that I make for B's have been reported as taking on parking curbs and winning!

With all that said, does anyone have one they'd like to part with off a parts car?

Or, what was supposed to be under there to begin with?

There should be a metal crossmember under there that the spoiler covers up. There are 2 types of spoilers for there, the fiberglass one VB has, and the OEM style plastic/rubber one (which I have on my car). Personally, I'd pick the plastic/rubber one. It seems durable, and I'd be concerned about how the fiberglass one would hold up in an altercation with a curb. The OEM ones were NLA for awhile, but are available again.

The original spoiler was a black plastic tube that fitted to the lower metal valance. It had 5 or so well nuts cast into the plastic for mounting. Most have been scuffed, ripped, or ruined by parking lot curbs. They come and go as far as availability. When they are available, expect to pay between $100 and $200 for one. Used ones are hard to come by. There have been some cheap fiberglass repos in the past. They obviously are not a complete tube and are similar to the MGB fiberglass ones in construction but much less ornate. I have not seen one of those in years. They were not big sellers. Way back, you could buy some fancy IMSA stlye front air dams. They mounted to the underside of the bumper and wrapped around the sides. Most were incorporated into a ground effects kit that VB sold. Most people like the simple looks of the stock spoiler. If the metal piece is in good shape, that looks nice all by it's self. Driving an 8 in a hot weather climate, without the air dam, may lend to overheating issues. I have an old fiberglass front clip that I got from a guy who raced in Trans Am during the 80's. It is crazy big, and I can't see anyone running it on a street car, but it came off of one. If you want to see pics of any of the fiberglass stuff I have, PM me. The attic of my garage is full of homemade fiberglass stuff, including hoods, bumpers, and spoilers, for TR8, MGB, and BMW 2002. Fiberglass bumpers on an 8 do wonders for weight reduction; just don't hit anything.
