Where can I get some info. on a new Morgan? I saw two at the Charleston SC car show this past October. They look just like the older models, but I think fiberglass is used instead of aluminum for the body. Correct me if I'm wrong. PJ

Thanks for the info. Will check them out. PJ

I like this option

BASIC VAT TOTAL
Photographic build record ÂŁ120.00 ÂŁ21.00 ÂŁ141.00

I see I could have one for about 85K. Nice, will check my stash tomorrow, think I am not there yet.

Hi Paul-

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.

New morgans aren't available in the states anymore, except for the aero 8 and aero max. Both are extremely prone to quality control issues, and I wouldn't recommend either.

+8's (eight cylinders) can be had for $40k, but average $50-65k. +4 (triumph 4-cylinders) and 4/4 (ford 4-cylinder) can be had for $15k, but average $20-25k.

Fiberglass wings can be had in the Morgan aftermarket; factory cars were either steel or aluminum-skinned.

If you are really interested I know of a 60's +4 that needs some TLC for $10k (firm) in the northern VA area.

Have they sold out of the 'Roadsters' then? The ones with the 3.0l Ford V6 in the +8 bodies. Our local Morgan dealer had sold a few of those before he got bored being a Morgan dealer. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

I've also never understood why they didn't try to bring in modern +4's. They used the Ford Zetec engine and since it was already a US emissions certified engine, their biggest hurdle would have already been jumped.

Yes, the V6 roadsters are all gone. There were only 81 available for sale in the states, as that is the number of air bags left in inventory. Apparently the supplier won't deal with morgan anymore, which is an all-too-common story these days.

To answer your second question, the Ford Zetec was installed in the 4/4's, and yes, there were some imported. most customers preferred the 8-cyinder engines, though. Shame, really. The biggest reasons they aren't importing anymore is 1) increased standards in safety and crash equipment and testing (side curtain air bags and computer-monitored tire pressures and such) and 2) candidly, they've never much cared for dealing with the american market, even though it has been profitable for them in the past. Can't say I blame them.

As for Morgan of the Rockies, Al was instrumental in the demise of the largest Morgan dealer, Cantab Motors. Regardless of my opinion, in the aftermath of the politics and legal muck, Morgan isn't even going to try to sell traditional cars here anymore, and the Morgan Motor Company has limited factory parts sales to a single dealer in the states.

As I understand it, Al was only the final shot in the sinking ship of Cantab. Al got hurt as well from his attempts to take over Cantab. Probably worse than you know. I know Al, I know him personally, but I wouldn't exactly call him a friend. Even if he did let me drive his Aero 8 demo. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Ooof. I wanted to type a long response to that one, but suffice to say that ultimately, everyone lost in the demise of Cantab, and aside from the loss of a dealer, the American Morgan enthusiasts lost the most because of the way everything went down.

So which car did you drive? The famed green-on-green car? How high were you able to wind it out? During my time with Cantab, I obviously had the opportunity to drive the #6 car, and very much enjoyed having it 10 feet from my desk. 8) Makes me angry that Morgan Motor company was so inept in controlling production quality. It could have been a great car, even if so very different than a traditional Morgan.

I don't doubt that you did. But I don't want to give the impression that I was defending Al. I'm not. Let's leave it at that.

Yes, I drove the Green-on-green car. The side pipes sounded pretty cool too. If Al knew how fast I took it, he would have been VERY upset. Then again, whoever is in possesion of the car now might also be if they ever find out. Do you know if it went to Mexico or not? Anyway, I can tell you that I broke the ton at a very rapid rate. Not comfortable confessing to beyond that.

I was informed that the old +4 morgans were hand made and that the sheet metal parts from one car won't fit very well on another car, is this true? Doesn't sound right to me, but what do I know. Also I've been told that Moss is selling a 5 speed tranny for the car. Any truth to this? PJ

<laugh> and I know better than to defend Cantab....

Tooling around the back roads of Virginia, I had similar experiences to what you're describing. never had the guts to go past 4th gear, but that was some 4 times the speed limit on those roads.......

last I heard the "green on green" car was being shipped back to England via Morgan Spares, but that may have just been rumor. Cantab had it for MOG34. All I recall is that bits were coming off - even the tow hook snapped when pulling it onto the trailer.....

yes, morgan sheet metal is still handmade for all but the Aero's. I heard the wings are being hydroformed now, though.

We have a '65 4/4 series V competition in the shop now that was hit by a plow truck. With 1 wing and half the bonnet crumpled, we were faced with either hand-beating the sheet metal back into shape, or ordering a matching hand-made replacement set of wings, both bonnet halves, and inner valences. That's just the way these things go......

No, moss does not have a 5-speed conversion for a Morgan that I know of - but Morgan Spares does. Others have been done as well, including a Toyota 6-speed. Seems a little silly for a TR engine, though. A 4/4 with a formula Ford engine can be used with the Sierra (XR4Ti) 5-speed gearbox.

My grandfather was a panel-beater, used to make the wings for Morgans.

Man, I'd love to talk with him, to ask how wings were done differently over the years, how they welded the pieces together, and just hear his stories about the factory.... Most of that knowledge has been lost at the factory now.

Well, I just found out that I need another backhoe. Have to drop the toys for a while. Morgans on hold till ????? I'm ordering a new machine as soon as I get the specs from the Texas dealer. Go figure. I won't even get into the damages. $$$$$$$$$ PJ

Just when i thought I was having a bad day, you reminded me it's not as bad as I thought.....

I will never have a day when I realize I need another backhoe..... 8) Life ain't so bad after all. <grin>

Jokes aside, sorry for your predicament, by the way. That's gotta suck.
