I wonder how many Morgans have made it to North America? They're all very cool - but I'm especially curious about the early ones. What can you tell me about these cars? Are they as fun to drive as they look?

I'm right there with you.

As pretty as the restored cars are, I always prefer beat up cars that I get to do.

But, for any of us with $200,000 burning a hole in their pocket..... Maybe one of our overseas friends, these days that only, what? like 5 Euros? heh.

100 per year for 25 years would be a rough estimate. Almost all still exist. Even the one crushed in the movie "War of the Roses" has been restored and is now o the racing circuit.

Regarding the early +8's (1968 to 74-ish), they seem to be the most desireable right now. These are referred to as "narrow-body, moss box" +8's. As the name implies, they use the 4-speed Moss gearbox.

Yes, they are a blast to drive. The bonnet looms in front of you like a huge proboscis. You can feel the car flex underneath and around you, and the V8 is a pleasant motor. There is an endless list of modification for +8's (how about 400+ HP, streetable and emissions compliant?)

There is little that is civilised about Morgans. They are all about "motoring" in the traditional sense and in the most barbaric of means. Gotta love 'em.

re: trikes, I would humbly suggest looking into JZR replicas. I recently heard of a nice one sold in the $13K range.

Also, there was an article in Kit Car maybe 15 years ago called "building the Anders Cyclecar". The subject was an enthusiast who built one from scratch.

If you want an original, a complete rebuilt motor is gonna start at $10k, (Matchless, Anzani, or JAP) and probably a year of build time / finding parts.

There is at least 1 company in England who sells a complete new trike body, skinned and ready to go.

I know of a "driver" 1974 4/4 4-seater for sale in the $20k range. Lots of dents and dings, but mechanically and structurally solid.

I'd like to say something about a "British car mechanics work is never done", but the truth is, I'm playing catch-up after spending too much time getting my Fiat back on the road...... 8)

Take heart. THIS British Car mechanic is embarking on an A/C compressor R&R on a friend's Dodge Caravan this AM. :frown:

Drudgery, but hey, what're friends for. Her Fiat 124 got a rebuild a couple years ago.
 
Most of the Plus 8s that made it here are older ones with Moss boxes, not newer Rover 5 speeds.

Isis in SF did certify them again using propane to get them clean enough, and still sell them (for lots of loot) so if you want one badly enough......
 
Dang, I've owned 2 of those coupes plus a Spyder. Didn't get anywhere near that for them though.
 
I still wouldn't mind finding one with a little termite damage... Woodworking I can do.
 
still own my 124 Spider but with that Coupe pricing, I might have to consider selling it... NOT the Dino, just the 124.

And the way to fix termites in Morgans is the same way I did it in my Singer, when they tented my house for termites I made the Singer was in the garage :smile:
