I want to put the original steering wheel back on Emma. But it was nasty and rusty and pitted. Here's my before and afters! Now I just need the part thingy that makes it honk (looks like a big fuse) and I can put it on!

VOILA! And it looks even better than the picture because I just wetsanded it with very fine sandpaper and polished it again. Clear coat and it's done!

This is the thingy that is broken.

Scrap wallah? Box wallah? Aaahhh... Steerin' wheel wallah!

Well done. The "fuse lookin' thingie" ~can~ be copied with nylon dowel rod (hobby shops) and some MacGyverin', BTW.

That's what I need. The plastic casing it's in is broken. But first, I'll let Dahubby McGyver try to rig it up for me. You know, there's only those dumb airhorns in the engine bay. I suppose I have to buy a horn too?

hornS... MGBs have 2 horns... high pitch and low pitch... you gotta have a sound that'll grab people's attention when yer diving somethin that only comes up to bottom of a new sedan's windows... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I found this out the other day walking to my car at work. I got 2 spaces from my car and started to think it was stolen. I was standing next to 2 empty spots a VW Jetta in front of me and I could see two "empty" spots on the other side of the Jetta. Then I took one more step forward and the roof of my B ~just~ peaked up above the bottom of the windows on the other side of the Jetta...

soo... uhmmm... yeah... two horns ... high pitch and low pitch... I have a set on back order with Moss, and I'm getting ready to cancel it because it's taking so long. Not only that but I got a set of used ones that are working well enough... for now. hmmm... Second thought I'll keep those new units on order. The high pitch horn in my car has a hair lip.

Side question: Anyone else's British cars speaking French? (i.e. horns made in France)

Nice job JB...I need to do the same to my wheel...the exact same wheel as a matter of fact...I am inpired by your work /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I bought the horn brush from Moss for $10.

Good luck finding the original steel Lucas high and low horns...I bought 8 horns on Ebay before I got a good pair together. Nobody seems to know what an MGB horn is out there...it is an Lucas H9 I think. But I have a bunch of similar horns for sale cheap! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Including a french horn that sounds so wimpy and a german horn (Boshe) that is Beetle tinny! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Ya know, as long as it honks and doesn't play the theme from Dukes of Hazzard, I don't really care. I have 2 horns under the hood, and a button on the center console to honk with. I thought they were aftermarket airhorns, sure sound like a horn in a can. ANYTHING would be an improvement.

they were Lucas horns originally? hmmm... might those be some of them thar parts made of unobtainium these days? When I bought my 'B the PO gave me two extra sets of horns. The car is supposed to have the horns with 2 connectors, but one set of horns they gave me only had 1 connector. Additionally, every single horn that came with the car (on and off) was made in France, as is the working pair that I have on the car now... I can't remember the manufacturer right off hand, but I do remember seeing "Made in France" cast into the plastic housing.

JB: AFAIK the dual note horns of the MGBs was to create an inharmonic tune that may not be pleasing to hear, but mainly intended to be an attention getter... much more so than the single note horns most cars have. So, could that be what makes it sound air hornish on your car? Mine sounds boarderline air hornish, but the high note horn isn't working at full capacity... Either way, it's not a sound that I mentally had pictured for such a small car... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Somebody mention Hooters?

The passenger side needs four terminals (or some splice terminals) for 1) power in 2) power out to other horn 3)ground back to switch and 4) ground to other horn. The drivers side realy only needs 2 terminals, Power and ground to switch, through the other horn for both of them. Power is solid purple and the ground to switch is purple with a blue (I think) stripe.

The car's harness should take car of that for you though. The passenger side has 4 wires and only 2 on the driver's side. The setup with the stock harness in my car has the horns wired in parrallel.

Yup. There's a short harness from one side to the other at the grille. same colour code (purple, purple/black) and parallel off'n the right side hooter with four spade connectors (I just kinda *like* sayin' "hooter"!), runnin' to the left err.. you know, with only two spade connectors.

I've got lots of original Lucas horn - both H & L - all I have to do is throw 12v to them to find a good set, if anybody needs any....

WOW, Janel, new -used - hooters

I could use a new set of hooters.

In fact, Emma could use a set too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Wonder if Binabox needs some?

Hehe, Tony, Hooters To Go?

...and in matched pairs no less.

Yep, I can come up with a matched pair that when blown will draw a crowd

Put 'em on my list Tony!

Hey JB -
The wheel looks great! I'm about to do the same to mine. I've got my steel wool, sandpaper and polishing wheel at the ready. Any great secrets to impart to a first-time restorer? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
