Wakins Glen Gran Prix Festival & Smalley's Garage

Just wanted to share my adventure on the madien voyage of my 67 BJ8: Have been going to the Festival for 13yrs now. Took the Healey out after a 2 year restoration (Wife along) Ran like a top down the interstate 90 at 75MPH. Got to the hotel & wanted to go to dinner. Suprise no spark! (Thanks Lucas) Car had a new cap, rotor & Coil. Checked all out to no availe. Put the Pertronix system in in the parking lot. WOW! it ran for ----------- 1/4 mile then died in the dark of course. Flat bedded into town by a great shop "Wolf's Garage from Odessa, NY a real pro. Dropped it at, where else? Smalley's in the Glen. Still no luck. Could not get a cap & rotor locally but as all LBC Lovers are, we found a great guy to lend us a set. OK Set to GO! (about 1 mile up to the race track) the front wheel bearing crapped out. Supposedly checked out by a local shop who I will not mention in print. Back to Smalley's. He got a set of wheel bearings in that day & had me on the road. YES!
Went to dinner and started to pump oil out at a most alarming rate! OH, @#$%^&*X$%&! Enjoyed great dinner at the Stone Cate Cafe the proceeded to check it out. Nice LBC owners saw the predicament and drove my wife to get 12 quarts of oil so we could get back to town. Bingo! got the car back to Smalley's on Sunday. He, after working a 70+ hour week checked it out & ordered the parts for the broken oil line. I will pick up the car later this week. The moral of this long story is that when standed in the Finger Lakes/Watkins Glen area you can count on regular & professional folks to help you. No less than 6 people stopped when we were standed and asked to help. The flat bed hauler was a pro & very freindly, Smalley's Garage lived up to it's reputation as a class act for sports cars.
We still had a great time & met more wonderful LBC lovers.
Yep, we will be back next year & tow the Healey with the Triumph. (Just kidding) Happy Motoring to all!

Sorry to hear about your troubles, but, man what a great weekend huh? Not a whole lot of Healeys there this year though.
My friends and I camped at the track (top side of the boot) and had a wonderful time.

Motorhead67,

Yes, it was a fantastic time. As always they do a great job on this festival. It was funny how my BJ8 morphed into a Malibu rental car for the weekend. Again it was do to great people who gave me a ride to the Corning/Elmira Airport to get a car. This way I could still get around & enjoy all the events. Look for us next year 67 BJ8 Colorado red over black coves with a sunfast top.

Re: Wakins Glen Gran Prix Festival & Smalley's Gar

If the trip went smoothly without problems, it would not have been memoralble! Sounds like yer wife has the patience of Job! Mine would not stand for any of that nonsense. I cant even get her to go for a ride around the neighborhood!

Green Hornet,
Yep, my wife is very good natured when it comes to the toy cars. We also own a 79 Triumph for the last 14 years. The big Healey was a dersire for the both of us. Now we get to go back to Watkins Glen, Smalley's Garage and pick up the Healey next weekend. The good parts of this trip will be
A. Driving the Healey
B. Waktkins Glen is in the heart of wine country (Ah, tastings)
C. Driving the Healey.

PS: On the been there, done that side of things. Yes I did buy the "Smalley's Garage" Shirt.

Happy Healeying to you!

Re: Wakins Glen Gran Prix Festival & Smalley's Gar

Great story!
I always think that driving a Brit sports car builds character......or at least it will turn you into a "character".
I've been going to the Glen since I was in high school (that was just after all the dinosaurs died off).
One of my favorite places up there is the Seneca Lodge. There are lots of photos and items from the days when the F1 crowd hung out at the Seneca.....well worth seeing.
I'll be up there racing in an EMRA 3-hour enduro in November.
