"wait for the shake"

when i turn off my car, it shudders for a few seconds before coming to rest (much in the same way one might when finishing taking a leak – sorry for the crass analogy, but it was the only way to describe it). is this something worth checking out, or is it common?

thanks.

Yes it's pretty common for the motor to "run on" after switching off the key. You can check the timing and idle speed. That seemed to take care of most of it for my Healey but when the motor is real hot it would still run on. Before shutting off, I put it in second gear and with one foot on the brake, start to lift the clutch pedal until you hear the motor slow down, then turn the key. Problem solved /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Joeq,

My 60BT7 does the same thing occasionally. When I am alone it always stops right away. When I pull up in a drive end with a bunch of car buffs looking on then it run's on. So it seems to be directly proportional to the number of critical onlookers present. Actually it is pretty unpredictable....

thanks, i probably should done a search before posting.

so, why second gear? is it because the engine is revving too slowly in first to cut out when you let up on the clutch?

so, why second gear?

The main reason is that it is easier to slip the car in second since 1st is non-synchro. Also the higher the gear the easier it is to stall the motor (try pulling away from a stop in 3rd or 4th!). In first there might be more of a tendency for the car to lurch forward but as long as you have the brake firmly applied and let the clutch out just enough to slow the engine it will work just fine.

John

This didn't happen to me right after my rebuild, but when I couldn't get the highest octane gas the problem did happen again: back on Sunoco premium which I think is 92, it has gone away. So you might try a higher octane gas or an octane additive.
