The stoopid thermocouple thingie in my Braun coffeemaker has gone fer a chop... bridged the thing and brew'd up yesterday, this AM the thing crapped out again. Haven't ripped it apart to see what's gone off. Had to resort to the avocado color'd "Mary Proctor" 'lectric percolator. Thought fer a tick I'd be boilin' water in a saucepan, makin' "camp" coffee. Funny thing about th' Proctor Silex pot: stamped onna bottom it says the waranty expires in '75...

We get soft sooo easily these days. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

I do get cranky if I don't have a strong cup of
French Roast. Local coffee shop now serves a
"double dark French Roast," and I really like that
one.
Getting deeper, and deeper into addiction....kinda
like with the TR.

Me and 'ole Tinster should consider seeing the
same psychiatrist at the same time. Same story,
different guy....half the price.

JAVA...gotta have it...quit smoking 10 years ago using my own "caffeinated program". Coffee consumption went up to about a pot a day but I'm still off smokes...so far they haven't come up with any "SURGEON GENERAL" stickers on my coffee mug!!!

For good or bad, I never developed a taste for the stuff. Odd, since some of my favorite brews (Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout for instance) are very coffee flavored.

I think I annoy my wife in the mornings. I'm up and cheery with no caffeine, she's grumblin' around with a cuppa in one hand. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Our UCB daughter introduced us to Peet's French Roast about 10 yrs ago and we've been hooked since. Get it delivered monthly. Even take it & filters with us on trips so we can brew a decent pot in the motel/hotel room. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I've tried several things for coffee, from drip to percolate to single serve and French press. Love the French press and the single serve coffee things that look like tea bags aren't too bad. Part of the problem is that my wife doesn't like coffee, and I'm not exactly a guzzler, so I'm always trying to find ways to make it with a minimum of waste.

I'm non-aligned as far as brand, just don't hand me anything smelling of vanilla or other foo-foo stuff... black coffee, no adulterations, please. I do prefer it hot, but temperature isn't even a factor. I'll drink it cold from th' pot after it's sat all day.

Odd this...I had a cup of coffee this morning. First one I've had in about 2 months. Started freeking me out so I stopped and sipped a little tea hear and there. Drinking a pot everyday will really mess up the system.

Listen up Doc!!

Our 3rd world power company "Flicker and Flash", we call
it) does not always have the power turned on. So we have
to be creative. Particularly when it comes to our (my)
coffee needs.

Emergency coffee brew:

Home Despot propane torch
Home Despot torch scratch ignitor
1 cup copper measuring pot filled with water
piece of paper towel
coffee mug
Handful of Puerto Rican, mountain grown, coffee grounds

Need I continue? Many a cup brewed this way.
Actually faster than Old Joe Di.

I'm with you doc, just the way it comes out of the pot. I bought a grinder afore Xmas and now I grind the beans and boy does it make a difference in taste. Ran out of the beans last week and had to resort to the commercially ground stuff. Terrible stuff, was back with the beans within 24 hrs.

P.S. there is no life before coffee

I've a grinder here too. I will go to the effort if there are beans around... Herself drags home the kill, I prep and cook. If the pre-ground is cheaper than beans (THAT makes NO sense, but there ya go), it's coffee from th' tin.

I had a blade grinder for years, but made the move to a burr grinder about a decade ago. Huge difference in how the coffee tastes. With a burr grinder, you can dial in how coarse or fine you want. A blade grinder will over grind some beans and under grind others. Hard to get a consistent cuppamud that way.

Coffee, one of the three major food goups. Coffee, chocolate, and cholesterol.

Hmmm... another kitchen tool! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Sounds kind of like when we have hurricanes here in Fl. Before I got a percolator, we would boil water on the grill in a pot, and then slowly pour it into the basket of our coffee pot, making something less than adequate.

Nothing worse than having a broken coffee pot.

I've all the hurricane gear but it's all put up. Propane two-burner, Pyrex coffee pot are part of it. A friend delivered a "Mr. Coffee" unit this AM. I swapped out a bogus EGR valve on his daily driver as trade. Perfectly equitable, IMO! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I`m with Drew here, I never really developed a taste either.
I like a cup if i`m out and it`s cold weather. Good or bad tasting? I couldn`t say either way.
I worked for a Bask herder in the Helena National Forrest one summer when I was 14, the way he made coffee, {His pot had a good coating of black crud, no strainer or filter of any kind, throw in a handful of grounds, boil vigerously then drink.} well lets just say I think he cured me from habitualy drinking it. His coffee would curl your toenails! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

I started drinking coffee in eighth grade- we would ditch Sunday School and ride to a diner with the church organist in his Renault Caravelle. At home when I was going to add milk or sugar to my coffee my dad said in a manly voice, "a man drinks his coffee black," so I've been drinking it that way for almost fifty years. I use an almost twenty-year-old Braun grinder- it grinds as fine as dust to as coarse as pebbles.
I tend to avoid the fancy drinks at Starbucks or Seattle's Best- just plain coffee and a scone from breakfast.

I like to grind my beans too. Did ya ever watch "Dances with Wolves"? ya know that scene where Kevin Costner is grinding coffee for the indian chief? That's the grinder I have. Hand crank, little wooden drawer, wing-nut to adjust the coarsness. Works like a charm. power or not. I even take it camping along with my tin pot with the perkolator in it for over the fire. That works nicely too. By the time the bacon and potatoes are done, and the eggs are cooked, the coffee is ready to go. Nothing beats breakfast over a campfire.
At home it's the regular coffee maker, but I do have one of those stove-top "Mocha express" jobbies that makes one powerful cup-o-joe, for when I need an extra boost.
I'll admit it. I'm a sissy boy. I need plenty of cream, and a bit of sugar. And I do like a good Cauppicino once in a great while.

I have a blade grinder now I'll have to buy a bur grinder. Go a new coffee pot with the grinder built in. I don't like it because you have to wash the grinder every time. I had visions of putting a lot of beans and just putting in water and a new filter. The moisture gums up the grinder. Love my French Roast, coffee with cream and sugar tastes like uncooked pumkin to me.
