VW Beetle trivia question

SWMBO has an '02 Beetle. When you unlock & open the door, you hear the quiet whirr of an electric motor - but nothing moves. Anyone know what that would be?
 
Oh, when you said "VW Beetle" I thought you meant the real ones!!
 
does it have automatic climate control? wife's saab does that also and I decided it was the automatic climate control running the ventilation motor.
 
doesn't sound like it - if the seats were electric I would say it sounded like the seat moving back - kind of a gear moving sound
 
Unlocking the other doors, "trunk" lock and gas door?

could be - but you would think that happens when you unlock the door not when you open it

If not, it may be unlocking the seat recliners (they would re-lock when the door shuts).</s>

<u>Edit</u>: Ignore the above: I just asked my resident VW guy: He thinks it is the fuel pump charging the lines so that the car will start quickly.

SO now the VW products don't require an ignition key "first position" to run up the pump?!?! Clever. Should be a 10 to 15 second buzz/hum... but every time you open the door? Odd.
