Hello!

I recall at some time on this forum coming across some modifications to the Boot for a BN4/BT7 to allow a larger spare to be fitted. I'm interested if anyone has fitted a 185X70 spare tire to their boot and what was needed to get it to fit.

Don't know how much different BN4/7s are, but to fit a 185/70 Vred in my BJ8 I took the wood block off the rear bulkhead and the holddown strap out. It just fits, and the boot lid holds it down.

Edit: BTW, the tire is mounted on a 6" rim; a smaller rim should be a less snug fit.

You all can feel free to chuckle but I used to slightly deflate my spare to make it fit. Sure changing a flat took an extra step of putting some air into it before use but it isn't a huge deal to carry either a hand pump (they really do work if you have a good one although in 45 years of driving in the States I've never seen anyone using one excep on a bicycle and they are not the pumps of the sort I carried) or a can of "fix- a -flat". They make some real small 12V compressors these days too..... With my luck the chances are good my spare will need air regardless. Yeah, but that never happens.
 
Just use a standard size tire and wheel for the spare ,all the modern cars add a mickey mouse wheel/tire, after all it is a just a spare?
 
Using tires with a larger diameter and/or section than the originals is particularly vexing on two-seaters. When I traded up to 175 XzX's I found the spare would no longer fit, and after due consideration I got brave and "expanded" the height of the aperture a bit with the judicious use of a scissor jack. My present 180 XAS's are a bit tighter still, but a plastic dry cleaner bag allows me to wiggle a fully inflated spare in and out.
