Volvo !

God bless heavy little cars with even littler heavy engines. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Wow, very cool! Speaking of Volvos, my wife and I have been debating whether to replace her Miata (when it's time to do so) with either a new Mini Cooper S or a Volvo S60. I'm leaning toward the Volvo due to the reputation that they "take a licking and keep on ticking."

Thats certainly true Basil, but I do not know if that characteristic has been preserved under the Ford management. I would check on some volvo forums and get a feel for the new breed.---Fwiw--Keoke

Of course the top of the line produced in limited numbers was the 123GT it boasted 118 HP, higher triming and an overdrive.-They - /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif-Too

Hi SU That is a VERY interesting under hood (or bonnet) layout you have there! I have never seen air cleaners like that before, they look a bit restrictive but perhaps I am looking at them wrong.
The main problem that I see is your exhaust manifold, the single down tube type is too restrictive for a b18b or d, and right out for a 20. See if you can find a cast iron one from a 68 on up, they are much less restrictive once you get rid of the 'butterflies'.
Check out a brickboard thread under the 544/444 group. something about manifold photos I think.
I do like the heater valve though! Is the heater plumbing routed through some sort of bottle by the exhaust?!?

Cheers!

OH Dave you be talking about the "Submarine Manifold"---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nice 122

They are built like little tanks, my neighbor had one for years, with regular maintenance it was an energizer bunny.

ahh the aircleaners... they were made by the DPO at the shop where we work. I agrer they are restrictive, there is a slot top and bottom for ait to flow...sort of. On the heater hose arrangement, it is plumbed into a block heater, and from what i can tell there are 2 cores? havent had time to look into it yet. I have been busy putting a storage addition on the garage.

i will see about the exhaust manifold....The engine i have been calling a B20b , is this incorrect?

Mark , can't be sure as one of the differences between the B20A & B20B is the Cam. The cam is marked on the end and can be used to identify which series engine is installed. However, I would guess it is the B20A engine since the 123GT used the "B" @ 118 HP while the standard cars were equipped with "A" engines rated @ 90 HP.---Fwiw---Keoke

Must be the time to find Volvos..When I went to buy my 66 VW bus a couple of weeks ago..the guy took me into his warehouse and there sat a real nice 63 P1800 Volvo. Called my pal here who collects them and hes buying it. Guy also had three Spitfires lurking in the rafters..quite a sight.

I want a P1800 one day soon.

Hi SU, you may well have a b20b, they started using them in the 220 wagon about 10 cars after mine was built in '68 they came in many if not most sedans imported to the US - all the way up to the FI, so there are a lot of them.
The Cast Iron manifold was a tuned manifold 4 into 2 into 1 and the exhaust end of it is superior to many headers sold currently, just don't run dual exhausts as it screws the scavenging up, (I run 1 2" pipe all the way back and that works well).
People even hack the intake parts off and just use the exhaust side of these things!
What is inside those air cleaners? inquiring minds want to know!

Cheers!
Dave G.
