Volvo 240 Wagon transmission question...

Does anyone know if the tail-shaft housing (seal and bushing) on an automatic transmission 240 wagon can be replaced with the transmission still in the car? Will supporting the trans and removing the rear mount and cross-member allow enough access or will a puller be required to separate the tail-shaft housing from the trans case?

Any help appreciated!
 
Wow... you sure know how to pick 'em, Shawn.

I did it with th' box on the floor, a number of years back. I don't recall needing a puller. I think I just whacked it with a rubber hammer as I put tension on the housing.

I ~had~ the Motors manual for the trans but it has been buried in the archives someplace. If I find it, I'll let ya know ASAP.

...that sled was finally "donated" to the VA. It served well when needed tho.
 
Get the gasket for the rear housing to trans case. Drop the mount (after the driveshaft natch...).Remove the flange, and unbolt and remove the entire rear housing. Easy to get the bush out, and to knock the new seal in. You will likely lose a little trans fluid. Be careful not to let the driveshaft separate. If it does, no biggie, but ALIGN the U joints when you put it back. I have seen a LOT of Volvos with the front section out of phase with the rest of it. MMaaakkkeeessss things shake. Might as well get a couple of the little cheap shifter bushings from the dealer too. They are usually shot as well.
 
My friend has a cracked tail-shaft housing and is loosing fluid already, loosing a little more ATF won't be a big deal as we will be checking and filling the fluid back up afterwards anyway. I was worried about being able to do it in the car. Going to have to do it in his garage on jack-stands. Didn't really want to have to pull the engine and trans to do it. Will make sure to keep the driveshaft in the same alignment. I'll check the local libraries for shop manuals too, he doesn't have one. He has a line on a good used tailshaft housing, gasket, seals and bushes already so the parts should be taken care of.

BTW Doc, I don't pick 'em, they seem to search me out sometimes. Just replaced all the window seals on a '91 Chevy S-10 for a buddy too. Molded 1-piece window seals and a really easy to install waist seal. Expensive, but easy to install.

And take Jesse's shifter bushing suggestion to heart as well. MUCH easier to deal with while you're under there!

I know about ~some~ ferrin window seals. Mostly Hondas. :shocked:
 
According to the shop manual, it can be done without removing the transmission. Below is the entire, super-complicated procedure.

That was fun...

Not difficult at all. No special tool needed either. Impact wrench took it right off while holding the flange. Somebody had been in there before and used the wrong bolts on the old case where the transmission mount attached, the bolts were too long and didn't seat properly. They wiggled around and ended up breaking the case which was why it was leaking. Took care of that on the re-installation. Its all good now.
