Voltage Reg.

I'm stumped once again. Here's the situation: while driving my BJ8 the other day there was an odor that smelled like wires burning. Nothing smoking but I checked the output of the voltage regulator at the warning light terminal and got readings as high as 16 volts. The manual says I should have no higher than 15 or so. So, Ok, I'm burning up my electrical system. (The dash lights sure are bright!)
I installed a new regulator and flashed the wire from the regulator BAT lead to the generator for good measure.
The red generator light on the dash wouldn't light so I started testing the output of the voltage regulator. While doing this the regulator smoked up badly. Got myself another regulator and still find no voltage from the WL terminal. If I plug in the old regulator I get a voltage reading.
I've converted to negative ground. Don't know if that has affected something.
Any suggestions?

Oh, boy I'm confused. I tested for voltage at the battery with the new regulator-- high 15's. Changed the light bulb at the dash and now it seems everything is fine even though the bulb I pulled out worked when I tested it with a battery.
I don't get it but everything seems to be working correctly.
Part of my Lucas education I guess. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Time for a cold one.

PS in the future do not flash any leads at the Votage regulator to anything /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

Thanks Keoke. I'm not sure what happened here but it's charging fine now. I'll road test it this evening. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

This evening?

I'm sure its just waiting for a dark and stormy night to go very badly wrong... on some deserted back road frequented by homicidal maniacs....

I generally never consider anything that fixes itself to be truly fixed... just waiting a better opportunity to make mischief.....
