And on this date back in 1945, there was an interesting B-29 flight over Japan. The last bombing run, and seems to have been *after* the surrender message was transmitted by Japan to Switzerland (and to the USA):

And until today, I completely forgot about the August 1945 Japanese military plan to kidnap the Emperor, destroy his surrender order, and bring the long-feared invasion to reality.

Never knew about that. I think a coulpe more visits from the Enola Gay woulda changed their minds. :wink:
 
The Enola Gay could have visited, but the US only had those two nukes. It would have taken months to make more.
 
The link above implies that there was a third.

"A third atomic bomb was being readied to be shipped to Tinian, and could have been dropped on Japan on the first good weather day after August 17 or 18."
