July 14, 1789. The revolution begins.

And freedom still continues to fight against slavery.

(I'm 68, and still get misty eyed when I see this.)

Vive la France!

With a slight detour into the years of the Emperor Napoleon France was headed towards the nation we know today. As was America that summer with the opening of the first Congress and executive under the then new constitution. Quite a summer of change for western Europe and north America.

I don't speak French but was very amused by the translated lyrics of the La Marseillaise. Pretty bloody in the second or third stanza.

Terrible. 80 now dead.

I've been there on July 14th and they do huge fireworks show in the bay (over the water), and the crowds along the beaches are huge.

The carnage, horrible and beyond my understanding.
On a lighter note, we stayed at Casablanca Hotel in NYC a few years ago. Small, quiet haven in the middle of Times Square. Copy of the movie Casablanca, which I never tire of, in every room. Guy in a white jacket played piano in the afternoon with drinks and snacks, the hotel description was more elegant and cost a bunch but I would seek it out again.

I understand it. I hate it, but I understand it.

As for Casablanca, that's one off my favorite movies and I have it in my iTunes movie collection. A timeless movie to be sure.
