Hi guys,

I work at a shop where we do car wraps and lots of vinyl graphics. I was hoping you guys could post some of your favorite classic racing paint jobs for some inspiration. I like the looks of my sprite as-is but a full vintage inspired wrap would be cool. Some guys are wrapping their new cars in the old Gulf racing team colors but I'd like to see some Sprite specific paint schemes.

not sure what you mean by that. can a wrap cover up a bad paint job? yep. could you make it look like you had your car painted? kinda-sorta. it'll look good from 5 feet or when it's moving.

i have no affiliation with this wrap but here's what they can look like.
 
A good friend of mine at work has a dark green SAAB 900 convertible.
She has always liked my white Miata and told me that she was thinking of getting her SAAB repainted in white.
Anyway, she ended up having a family member cover it in white vinyl. Still looks good after a year (see below).

You will see lots of various graphics at vintage races. One comment that's come up with some vintage club officers is that they don't want old vintage cars covered with stickers (like NASCAR racers).
The vintage folks seem to prefer nice colour accents or stripes (like the Elvas shown below) rather than a patchwork of commercial stickers.

You might also consider a more temporary solution than a wrap and use magnetic sign material to apply your graphics. This British Midget used magnetic media over his base blue paint to recreate a great looking Gulf look.

Thanks Nial, I was on your site for a while this morning.

Bill, that picture you sent is too funny. I don't think that that design suits the car. As far as temporary media goes, we have a temporary/removable wrap material that's used mostly on buses. The wrap can't get in to and around corners as well as the permanent material but it'll work fine for the smooth curves on a spridget.

it looks like most of the graphics on vintage spridgets would be better reproduced with cut-vinyl graphics. It's mostly simple text and stripes or small sponsor logos.

If i end up wrapping it I'll post it here. looks like i probably won't though. keep it simple, right?
 
If you want to remain somewhat period it will be simple, the early cars didn't even use stripes except for some early nose colors to help identify team cars from one another. The design on two of the Elva's seems to be similar to that type of treatment. That was about all except for the roundels with the numbers in them. It wasn't until the mid 60s that the front to rear stripes and over the bonnet strips came into wide use.
I agree that the "Gulf" Midget looks a little funny, but it was done for, and the photo was taken on the way to, the LeMans Classic vintage races a few years ago, so was a little more in character there. I'm sure the driver got a few chuckles and had a good time.
