..speaking of Vincents,

I was just reading about Marty Dickerson (I'm a lifetime AMA member and he's in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame). I thought I'd look around the web and see if there was any good pics of his bike.

I found some ~Great Pictures~ of Dickerson's Bonneville Vincent.
This bike held it's class record for 20 years.

Dickerson was a friend and team mate of the famous Rollie Free (another LSR racer with a Vincent).

Dickerson, a Californian, was also active in west coast road races on the same bike. Later in life he taught motorcycle repair in a vocational school and is still active in motorcycling today.

Within the last 10 years or so, in his 70s, he set a vintage land speed record on the bike.

This page has a fine little story, with great pictures, about Marty riding Steve Hamel's Bonneville Vincent just a year or two ago. Scroll down to the story headed, "It's hard to keep a good man down." (about 3/4 of the way down the page.)

Great Pics! Did you catch the Matchless (G12 I think) being used to start the Vincent. Pretty hairy technique.

Was listening to All Things Considered in the car yesterday and just caught the end of a piece about Steve Hamel and his Bonneville Vincent. Actually, I only heard the last sentence, "His goal is to get the Vincent to go 200 MPH," and I knew what they were talking about.

Here's the link to text, photos and an audio clip of the segment.

Thanks for starting this thread, Nial.

Really interesting guys, with a definite need for speed.

150 MPH with drum brakes! Holy moly, are they crazy or brave, or both . . .

If you take a close look at the poster picture at the top of this thread, neither of those bikes even has a front brake! There's a loooong run-out at the Bonneville salt flats and a 0.00062% chance that a dog (or something) is going to run out in front of you. Brakes are just dead weight on those bikes -- not really necessary.

I just looked at some pictures. Steve's bike has no front brake either.

Wouldn't want to drive one of 'em on a normal road, but then I wouldn't want to go 150 on a normal road, either.
