Austin Healey Vin and engine number question

I'm thinking of picking up a 1964 3000 (VIN HBJ8L/25955) but it is COMPLETELY disassembled. There are 2 engines with all the parts, one has the number
29K / RU / H961. the other has the number 29D / RU / H5826. The owner has no idea of which, if either, of the engines are from the car. Other than getting a Heritage certificate, is there a way to tell which engine goes with the car? Thanks

This ought to be posted in the Austin-Healey section. Perhaps one of the moderators will move it.

The 29D engine is from an earlier 3000 MkI roadster. The 29K series is correct for a BJ8. Steve Byers has the BJ8 registry. He probably can't tell you if 29K/RU/H961 is the original engine for the car, but might be able to tell you if it's close. His email address is available on the BJ8 registry form.
 
Thanks, sorry for posting in the wrong place. I just can't seem to find any info as to how to know if an engine number belongs to the car it's in, other than the Heritage thing or now contqcting Steve, which I will do. I thought there was something in the VIV that matched the engine number. Thanks for the help.
