very scary engine noise

Hold on a sec - shouldn't a compression check be job #1 here? (or a close #2)

Maybe.

If it's making that much noise, cranking it continuously for compression testing may not be such a good idea.

Looking at plugs (mashed over electrode), inspect valve train, roll it BY HAND with plugs out whilst looking and listening might just be the best line of attack at this point.

Update: so, I took an hour or two this afternoon, pulled the rocker arms, all the push rods looked fine. Took off the oil pan - no thrust bearings in the bottom. whew! Everything looked good and was rapidly realizing I was beyond my depth. Called Mark, he's on the road but can come tomorrow. Went back out to the car and looked again. Hmmm. I wonder if this would have anything to do with that hole in the manifold? I think maybe. One of the plug bolts that had something to do with the pollution stuff had fallen out. Fortunately this all happened in the driveway so the bolt was lying on the manifold. Will button it all back up tonight if I am home in time but, I'm 99% sure that is what it is. Will keep you posted. The moral of the story: simple things first and use your eyes too.

cheers!

Hope this works, fingers crossed.

You are absolutely right.

Pat

Go away for a couple of days and look what happens

I think you found the problem the hard way.

Cheers

See you soon

Mark

Early signs are - Touchdown!!!!!!! got the oil pan back on, retorqued the head (and it needed it) reinstalled the plug and tightened the two loose others and she starts great! Mark comes by tomorrow to help me set the valves and we are good to go - thanks again all!

valves adjusted - thanks Mark, shakedown cruise all worked and sounded like it should. a little rattle under the dash but some things never end.

That's whatever you put on top the battery that has now fallen down behind it.

Hoozay is something I picked up from the "Master and Commander" books and is in now way a reference to JP's racial identity.

I can only remember seeing 3 Great White North sketches, and those are two of them. Crazy, eh?
