In the mid-80s, I bought a clapped out Renault 5 from the local junkyard for $25.
For almost no money, I made it into a decent autocross/gymkhana car. Despite the low power, it was surprisingly effective at racing through cones.
In the end, I sold it back to the same junkyard for $25. (I'll have to look and see if I can find a photo of it....must be one around somewhere).
A few years later, as a newly minted single parent with three young kids, I bought a brand new Renault 9 ("Alliance" here in the US). It was assembled in the US plant in Wisconsin. It cost me $5000 new which was all I could afford.
I got nearly 200,000 miles out of it. Very basic 2 door model with 4 speed, 1400 cc pushrod engine and no radio. All my kids learned to drive a stick shift with it and I'm sure it got it's share of abuse from them as well as me. Oil changes and other maintenance were rare and the thing "lived" at redline.
Eventually, damage and rust on the front subframe caused me to donate it to my local vocational school. Where two young women took the engine out and found bearings, rings and all other wear parts to be
well within normal limits. (!!)
I have great affection for Renaults.
Someday it would be fun to own a
