Yes, and only on some cars. Early TR3 & late TR4 didn't have them.

Any pads between differential tube base triangular box section and the leaf spring or is it metal on metal? Thanks

Its metal on metal from what I've seen.

The "pads" mentioned above are actually steel (just short sections of spring leaf) spacers. The axle gets clamped firmly to the spring, so no movement possible and hence no (soft) pad needed.

Glossy photos to follow. The diff cleaned up really nicely after about 10 hours of scraping, wire brushing, and chemical stripping.

Here is a photo of my leaf springs taken in 1988 as I was re-assembling my 1958 TR3A. You can see the 2 extra pieces bolted onto the top of the spring for the passenger's side.

BTW Gordon, take a look at the photo of my rear axle above. Right now, after 103,000 miles on my car since 1990, everything still looks just like that underneath. If you do it right the first time it will stay like that a long time. Everything under mine was done with Dupont Imron aircraft and tractor-trailer paint.
