vehicle serial numbers

I just purchased what is listed on the title as a '67, but the car id is GHN3L105144, were the vehicles given sequential numbers as produced? I ask this obvious question because I have seen numbers of cars listed at 1966 vehicles with numbers even higher than mine. Miller Garage website in fact lists a 66 with a serial number of GHN3L106098. The MG registry also lists numbers all around mine, (but doesn't show mine) as being a 1966 number.

Many cars were titled during year sold and registered, not when made.

Look at the engine clock on the right rear of the engine block below the dizzy. It's possible that you might have the original engine. If so, the date on the clock would tell you when the block was cast. Could be a 1966. The vin. sounds like a 66. As Ralph said, it could have been a left over and sold and titled as a 67. I understand that this was fairly common. The vin number is what I would go by. Incendently, the first 1967 s-number for the 1967 calendar year was, 3-107975. I would say your car is a 66. PJ

The clock will look like this, with different numbers of course. I think I'm right in saying, Clockwise--Month, day, year of casting. This clock says, Feb, 8th, 1970.

I like your user name. "19 again" AAAAhhhhh, those were the days. Trouble is, we didn't know it then. PJ

Thanks Paul and vping, the car needs a lot of little things and so far almost all parts have been listed in a range of years so specificity may not be that important yet. I finally got it delivered yesterday, so first order is tuneup and basics like replacing the crosdale filters (!!).
As for the user name, I bought my first and only B when I was 19, that was in '69. In some ways they were the best and worst of times. But the user name was easy. The license plate, ahhh, there's the rub. I'm thinking of musical references like 25or624...R8D8ors or SUBDUDE (two favorite bands)... RED MGB... or 909---1 (Beatles song One after 909). Favorites?

Well, it was close, a little too close, BUT THEY DID DIDN'T THEY!!!! hehehe PJ

I gotta tell you, that I was a lot more concerned in the 2nd quarter than I was trailing by 8 with 5 minutes to go. Brady gets this look going and you say, OK everything is going to be all right now. It's eerie, but it happens all the time. Can't wait to face New Orleans in Miami. Pats win another SB!!
I need to jack the car up to see the "clock" on the motor block right? I meant to ask how you got that diagram into the email? just a copy/paste operation?

10-4 on the Pats! On the clock drawing,I just drew it up from a 70 I had while matching the engine to the car. The numbers, are the actual numbers from the engine. Scanned it, made it a jpeg file and the rest is history. PJ

Hey, 19_again! My first B was a '66, purchased in '69 as a 19-year-old, too!

That car went a quarter-million miles in a decade for me. PA road salt finally had its way, so the car was lost. Tranny/engine now in SWMBO's '64. I try to keep one set in "rotation" as spares. One day "rebuild" that way.

My '66's vin GHN3L966664

Janel, Isn't there one to many sixes in the number? Seems that the last Vin number for the MGB was in 1980 and was 503,520. PJ

Finger got stuck on the '6' key?

I kinda figured that! But, just checking. Hope all came out well with your car. PJ
