Read in the papers today that they are frisking incoming aussies in case they have a jar of this in their possession, apparently it has now been banned in the US because it contains folate!?
Funny tho, its now a brand owned and made by a big US multinational!

So whats the big deal about folate? Don't tell me, it causes cancer?

That's just... just... goofy.

...next it'll be England and "Liquorice AllSorts"!!!

Beaurocracy gone mad?

"America bans Vegemite
October 21, 2006 06:00pm

THE US has banned Vegemite, even to the point of searching Australians for jars of the spread when they enter the country.

The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite has been deemed illegal under US food laws.

The great Aussie icon - faithfully carried around the world by travellers from Down Under - contains folate, which under a technicality, America allows to be added only to breads and cereals.

Australian expatriates in the US said enforcement of the ban had been gradually stepped up and was now ruining lifelong traditions of Vegemite on toast for breakfast.

Kraft spokeswoman Joanna Scott said: "The (US) Food and Drug Administration doesn't allow the import of Vegemite simply because the recipe does have the addition of folic acid.''

The US was "a minor market'' for Vegemite, she said."

Good thing the FDA is there to protect us from such evils /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Have they tried eating it?

reason enough for a ban.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

not quite as bad as Marmite, but still.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

They have blocked importation of several British foods in the past...... If it isn't harmful to plants, animals or human beings then why not allow it? After all, it's not is if they are protecting the American public from anything.......Americans wouldn't touch the stuff! The Aussies could always start to call it "liquid bread", then maybe they could start bringing it in again.

Doesn't folic acid occur naturally in some fruits and vegetables?

Folic acid is a naturally occurring B complex ~VITAMIN~ fer heaven's sake...

This is aught but LOBBYISTS in the employ of US manufacturers... FDA has "knuckled under."

BAH!!!

zblu: We ain't ALL Heathens... err... well...

...nevermind. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

straight from the CDC website:

Why Folic Acid is So Important

Folic acid is a B vitamin. It is used in our bodies to make new cells. If a woman has enough folic acid in her body before she is pregnant, it can help prevent major birth defects of her baby’s brain and spine. These birth defects are called neural tube defects or NTDs. Women need to take folic acid every day starting before they are pregnant to help prevent NTDs.

I'm thinking the 'reporter' got it wrong. Must be something more heinous in there besides the taste.

OOhh! OOhh!! I KNOW!!! Vegemite is fissionable material!!!

SPREAD th' word. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

...Mebbe that li'l weevil in DRK would like some...

there is only one so called food item in the world that is worse than Vegemite and thats Marmite - they actually taste similar - that is if you can stomach it. I think that is why the Australians drink so much beer - its the only way to wash away the taste of the stuff. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif

Don't be dissing Marmite! I have a jar of the stuff that I still love to dig into once in a while. Marmite tastest great, is nutritious and makes a great marinade ingredient for grilling.

As far as being a "so called food", check out the nutrition information on a box of Pop Tarts some time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Yes, Marmite isn't bad......it's what you're used to, I suppose.

While we are on the subject of wonderful harmless nutritional foods, how about Ho-Hos and similar concoctions?

Those things and "Twinkies" have a half-life about the same as plutonium from what I've heard. WHY would anyone voluntarily ingest that *stuff* more'n ONCE?!? It tastes the same as the packaging it comes in!

If you actually have ajar of Marmite on the shelf you must be a transposed Brit. In that case do you have a real English delecacy - Gentlemans Relish? Now thats an acquired taste /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Well Peter,I used to have Gentlemans Relish when I lived in NZ.(another bastion of Vegemite and Marmite eaters.)But I never quite "acquired" the taste for it.Not gentlemanly enough perhaps. But it is a little better than vegemite.
Gentlemans Relish is made from anchovies,(what is an anchovy anyway?)

Marmite is wonderful! I will hear no bad about it, especially in a country that foisted grits on an unsuspecting victim. . .

On the subject of grits /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif I'm with you 100%. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif
