Valve Cover

I'm the new owner of a BJ8. Just removed the valve cover to paint it the proper color. Cleaned off the old gasket and got a new cork gasket from Moss plus the rubber gromets.
A. What kind of gasket seal is recommended?
B. What are the foot pounds of torque for the valve cover?
Thanks.

Hi Larry,
You'll probably get a couple different opinions on gasket dressing, here's mine. For the gasket-to-cover, I use something like Permatex 97 high tach. Let that set and use Hylomar (non-hardening) for the gasket-to head joint. That way, you aren't chancing gasket chips falling into the engine when you scrape an old gasket off. I'm not aware of a torque value for the valve cover. I tighten just past the gasket starting to compress.

Greg,

Thanks for the onfo. I've got the Blue and the Black Permatex Gasket Maker.
You've confirmed what I normally do with my other cars.

My opinion (what we do here), as recommended by a life-long LBC, and race mechanic:

We use RTV between the cover and the gasket, and NOTHING between the gasket and the head. Yeah, I know it sounds crazy, but he set this up for me about three years ago and I haven't had a problem since. I've had the cover of two, or three times since then...

Same procedure I've been using for decades.
