At long last! With the help of a couple of good friends, I finally got the V6 installed in the GT today!

Paul Stedman (who's been a member here for a while, but hasn't yet posted... hint, hint...) and one of the members of my parish, Howell Foust, came over this morning and together we dropped the engine and transmission in, after much coaxing and the requisite beers.

Check the first six photos in the album here

Thanks, guys!!

WOOHOO!!!

WOOHOO! indeed!

It's gonna need lots of "massaging" yet. It's a much tighter fit than I was hoping for. But at least it's in.

At the rate I'm going, I should fire it up this time next year!

Very nice!

That V6 (GM I assume) sure does look natural in there.

That ain't tight, Mickey!

You've got room for two more cylinders!

Thanks, Drew. It is a nice looking package. Can't wait to get this thing on the road, but it's probably gonna be a while.

Maybe, but just barely!!

I like the extra room up front.

congrats! looks great.

Mazing how that motor looks like the Rover motor

Lookin' GREAT, Mickey! And not just the car....did I detect brand new roof joists and possibly skylights?? Also the before and after engine pics....SWEET! What happened to the yellow racer in the last picture? Did that find a new home? (Presuming that was taken at Tony's?)

Yep - that hackberry tree that fell did me a favor, in that I got a new shop building! Howell's son, Glenn, built it for me, and Glenn even came by for a while yesterday to help out.

Oh, and the "before" picture is a bit of a red herring. That was an engine I bought, but decided against using. Instead, I bought a crate engine and sold the one in the picture. But I did paint it red, and put a mild cam in it!

That other picture was at Tony's - one he had taken, in fact. The yellow car did sell, though I think the engine went elsewhere. Bob or Hap may remember who got it and know what became of it.

Nice to see it in place and it will be a real treat to get a ride in it when you get it together...Did I just invite myself to a ride? Well done! bob

Thanks, Bob. If I ever get this thing on the road, you're gonna drive it!

Looks like a very clean install!
It'll be fun watching your progress.

Which GM V6 is that? (liter-wise)
What trans?

Thanks, Nial. This has been an "interesting" process that has taxed my abilities, for sure! The installation was a struggle, but it fits nicely once in. I still have a bit of adjusting to do, but what a relief finally to have it in place!

It's a 3.4 - brand new crate engine. The transmission is a World Class T5 from a Camaro.

Mickey

Thats HUGE!! Congrats on your endever.
I have a V6 Vortec motor sitting
on the stand, I need to get a bell
housing and T5 for it. but I have a couple
questions.
1. Did you change the coil springs up front?
2. Did you get the V6 Kit from the guy in Camarillo Ca.?
3. Or did you fabricate the engine fit yourself?

I have my projects on the shelves for now as I have been
getting my CZ Motorcycles ready for a big MX event day
after Thanksgiving, but have a 1973 MGB that I want to stick
that vortec motor in.
Thanks (you horsepower junkie you!)

Hey, Dave -

No need to change the springs out, as the weight difference is negligible. After driving it a bit (whenever THAT happens!), I may swap out for lower springs.

And the kit did come from Classic Engineering. Also bought stuff from Brian at BMC in Minnesota. Both are excellent resources and always ready to provide advice, either on the phone or by email.

There are two forums as well, which are dedicated to V6/V8 swaps - one on MG Experience and another on British V8's website.

Armed with all that, it's not nearly as scary an experience as it could be. My main problem has been finding the time to work on it. And there was that little issue with the windstorm last May!

When you're ready to tackle the job, I'll be happy to share what I can. Might even have a few extra bits you may need.

Oh, and the T5 you want is the "World Class" from a V8, as it has the best gear ratios to go with the stock MG rear end (which is also up to the task). I can furnish that info as well.

Mickey
