The last time I changed oil in my Sprite was back in 1973. It hasn't needed it since then since that was when I dismantled it. Now I should have it back on the road in late spring. In the past when I changed oil I just put it in a jug and set it out with the rubbish. In today's world that method of disposal would be frowned upon. What do you guys do with the old oil when you put in the new stuff?
 
I use the old oil in my chainsaws. Even keep a pail handy to dip the bar in during heavy cuts. I didnt realize how long a chain and bar will last if you just keep them oiled. The automatic oilers dont seem to do anything but leak when not in use.
 
Most parts houses nowadays will happily take your contributions. They sell you new oil and sell your old oil. Makes cents to me. Or out of my dollars
 
SOme garages have waste oil burners and will happily take it off your hands.

Most of our local regional/ municipal governments have a waste drop off program for paint oil etc. at the dump or the transfer station.
 
As fordtrucks said above, most parts houses will take drain oil (at least around here). I regularly take mine to Advance Auto but AutoZone will also take the stuff as will the local Wal-Mart.
 
In CA most Kragens, Pep Boys, etc take it. Look in the phone book for used oil drop off. Or Google used oil + your town/area.

I use empty liquid detergent jugs from the laundry room for transport.
 
Dad poured it along the side of the slab for termites. I use it to kill shrubs I don't want and you can burn it in a cast iron heater or stove for heat.
 
I use empty plastic milk jugs but that's only good for 60 days or so before it starts seeping through the bottom. Once I have 3 or 4 I run it down to an oil change place and they take it, or most any parts store. Last time I bought it in the 5 quart jugs and refilled with used stuff.
 
As noted many parts stores take the stuff. Some municipalities have collection centers that accept all sorts of houshold waste like coolant, ATF, gear oil, brake fluid, electronics, tires, batteries and paints. Check Google for household waste collection and your town name.

Since I have quite a few projects I like to salvage the 5 gallon cooking oil containers from Asian restaurant dumpsters to hold waste oil. They are square, stack easily and last longer than plastic milk jugs. Just a hint for those changing their own often.
 
I use the local autoparts store I purchase the new oil from (Kragen) and they are always happy to dump my container - one of those handy drain pan/recycling things. If I were to use the local city waste recycling facility, I would not get my oil containers back as they do not have the facility to empty them on site.
 
I save it & when we go to the farm in TN, I spread it over the gravel road going past the farmhouse.....it's been done that way forever & we have a pretty good road that keeps down the dust....when county comes to grade road, they lift their blade over that section!

When I was a young kid that was what everyone in town did to keep the dust down in the ally-ways. Just part of being a good citizen.

I wait until its recycled into liquid asphault, so I can buy it back to fix the parking lot. :frown:
