Does anyone know how ownership is transferred on a used car in Ontario?

Does the buyer get a "signed over" Ontario Certificate of Title from the seller? or some sort of Ontario ownership transfer form? or ...?

I asked seller, and he said it's usually done with only a signed statement showing the sale (seller - buyer), and a receipt for funds paid.

Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks.
Tom
Edit: for those "in the know" - IT IS DONE!

I got an official Ontario title with my '58 A-35.

It looked somewhat similar to the title used here in NJ. Was signed by the previous owner.

The border guys looked at it along with all the other stuff I handed them. My sense is that it was important.

Also, I don't think a signed statement and receipt would fly here in NJ if you tried to register it. Not sure about other places.

Thanks. So Ontario actually issues a Title Certificate on older vehicles?

I know Connecticut doesn't issue a title on a car over 25 years old. If you buy a car over 25 years old here, the seller gives you a signed BOS (including car info like VIN, odometer reading, etc.) and a form Q-1 "Supplemental Assignment of Ownership" - but there's no title to sign over. And unless you do it often, most personal sellers have never heard of the Q-1 form. Lots of fun to explain that one.

hmmm

Yes Ontario issues a title (ownership) for all cars. Assuming you buy a car, the seller will give you a couple of things - a receipt, and the ownership - on the ownership is a spot for the owner to sign off on the car - in Ontario, I would then take the receipt, and the ownership (and for an old car an appraisal) and - of it was roadworthy - the "safety" certificate - to the Service Ontario centre - I would pay tax on the appraised amount and would walk out with a new ownership and a set of plates.

I don't know whether you want to try to change the ownership into your name here in Ontario before you leave, but, if you PM abarth69 on this forum he can likely tell you all you need to know as he has done it a few times.

Also, when Nial got his A35, he had to send back the receipt to get it notarized. (remember Nial?) there are far fewer Notaries in Canada than the USA - but they are around.
