Anyone by any chance have a used billet crank for a 100/4? Realize we can have one made by Moldex (already have Carillo rods), and know we can get one from one of the various English companies, DWelsch, etc. But would rather not have to buy new rods in addition to the steel crank. Ideas,?????
THanks
Ed

Is that what you have to do to these engines to rev them to 5000? (Sorry, couldn't resist). What do you guys run the 100 engine to for a redline?

4500, no more then 5000 with a stock crank. Long stroke, no harmonic balancer....bang....

Billet crank, smaller pulleys, harmonic balancer, higher redline... Thing is, if you rev it high with out these things, IT WILL, come apart. Crank will break, rod thru block, no more vroomvrrooommmm...............

Several years back when the Australian-American AH Challenge was going on my wife and I hosted about 4-5 of the Aussies to stay with us between the Summit Point and VIR events.

Geoff Leake and Rob Rowland were not only racing their own cars (100 and 100-6 rspectively) but also maintaining some of their competitor/customer's cars. What a bunch of great drivers and wrenches--they tore down and rebuilt Geoff's 100 over the course of one evening.

Geoff told me that on 100's a harmonic sets up at 3000 rpm's and I think again someplace up the line and to be sure to have a good damper and small pulley. so yours is good advice and I think over the winter I will replace my damper and switch to a small pulley as well. Competition or no, it is nice for engines to stay together.

Michael,
thanks for the backup. My father (now retired), visited Southern Carbs about 15+ yrs ago, well, I guess now its almost 20 yrs ago. At that point we were preparing our BN2 for vintage racing and gathering all the info we could. They told him, that from 3k + the 4 cyc engine develops a harmonic and basically, will eventually, "shake it self to pieces, with out crank damper." We dont have one, and have rebuilt our racing motor several times, and the crank was cracked, but had not broken YET.... Just plain dumb luck on our part. Another tip they said, is the 4 cyc car's exhaust needs back pressure, so a tailpipe to the rear of the car is needed to get max HP.

Would like to know if anyone out there has modified a US damper to fit a Healey. The cost vs one from DW, BIG DIFFERENCE!!

Here is an email for Jeff Leake who is in Australia which being an Island Nation has done a lot of what I call "Separate Development" for many cars, esp. Healeys. I would contact him and lay out your needs, concerns, questions, etc:

BTW what IS your first name--I don't think it is Wangdango and would prefer calling you something!

Thanks Mike,
we have met (with my father) @ LRP a few years ago, Jim Smith introduced us, Ed/Ed Preusser. Thank we had lunch together.

Right now think we have a good lead on a used billet crank, now gathering info on balancers. I see the one DW sells is made here in the US, sure buying it here would save A LOT of $$$.... If I remember correct, its made by Super Damper or something close to that.... Do you have it on your Healey?

Ed - I've been very happy with the harmonic balancer on my racing 6. It's been in use for 10+ years, made in Australia with US distribution. They have a 100-4 series unit which should be what you need.

I think it was close to $500.00 a few years back. The pulley is built into it. Fan belt loops around balancer, water pump, and generator/alternator.
