US Olympic swim trials

Saw a story on the news over the weekend. The US Olympic swim trials will be held in Indianapolis soon. What caught my attention was where they will be held, Lucas Stadium home of the Colts. Seems from the video shown they're building 3 temporary pools, one outside for practice and warmups and two on the football field. One the field, not in the field, so it stands 6-8 feet tall to the deck and will be 2 pools end to end. They apparently hope to draw large crowds to watch.

The past two trials have been in Omaha across the street from the College World Series stadium. They have always been sell outs here.

If they draw big crowds, good for them. The most interesting part for me was building two temporary pools end to end on top of the football field and a practice pool somewhere else on the stadium grounds. Lot of effort going in for a couple weeks then being taken down.

That’s the way they do things now that cities can bid on what tourist money they hope comes to town. In Omaha they did it in an arena, but arena staff are used to having swimming pools one week, rodeo next week, volleyball/basketball next, and then Berkshire Hathaway convention all right in a row. Yeh it seems like a lot of work but that’s the age we live in with traveling money and the need to keep the event space bottom line in the black.
