Upgrading my sound system

My 1989 xj6 has the original Dolby sound system in it, and I'm looking to upgrade. I still want to keep the same radio controls in the center by the gearshift, but I'd like to upgrade the speakers to something with better sound capability. I was thinking of keeping it Dolby, or perhaps going out for Alpine or Bose. I don't know much about car stereos. I do however, know that I could use an upgrade. Nothing too expensive. I don't need a massive sub woofer or anything. What has everyone else done regarding their sound system?
 
be careful modifying the XJ-40, lot of sensitive modules in there that can get damaged easily.

if speakers is what you are after, remove one of the old ones to measure and match with new ones.

Because I still have the original 5.25" speakers in my XJ, and they sound awesome with my Kenwood, I can't advise. But with my other cars, buying "better" replacement speakers has always been a disappointment.

Lots of hoopla and no cigar. So the proverbial "grain of salt" applies.

Okay, I've been looking at various speakers and today, when I went to check on the overall condition of mine, and to measure out the size "just to be sure", I noticed that, wow, replacing my speakers is a must. After twenty years, very little is left in tack. The two under the rear seat are practically gone(which would explain the crackling noise, what originally made me think to replace my speakers) anyway, those are practically gone, and the other four on the doors aren't in very good shape.

Well, now my questions are:

Is their a distributor that sells a set of six 3.5 inch speakers?
My other question is that I've looked on eBay and found that boss makes 3.5 inch speakers, but I'd have to buy 3 pairs, is their a specific type of boss speakers that have superior sound?
Would it matter if I used several different brands of speakers?
 
Boss or Bose ? Bose speakers are garbage. Read what Bose speaker owners go through. but it's your money.

have you checked with Crutchfield ? they offer lots of speakers and different levels of quality. www.crutchfield.com

I think what you have to stick with is the required OHMS, not the Brand.
6 speakers is a big load on a stereo, so each speaker cannot be higher than a certain OHM.

Boss speakers (I've never heard of them). I can't find Bose speakers, but I don't think I'll try too hard.

Crutchfield did have some good deals, but I think that I may buy my speakers from eBay. The only speakers Crutchfiled had that would fit were Infinity and I can find the same ones for about 40$ on eBay. I think I'll buy a pair of those now, see how I like them, and go from there.

I read the back of one of my OEM speakers, and it said 4 OHMS, so I should be fine.
 
Well, thank you very much for that link. I ordered a pair of 4" alpine speakers on Sunday night, and they should arrive by the latest on Friday. I can't wait to put those in.
