Update on my new, improved engine.....

Well, I finally, after three months, have had the opportunity to take my little baby out for a shakedown run. I drove for 2 hours at highway speed and 1 hour in city traffic. The results were impressive although I do have a little tweaking yet to do. The first thing I noticed is I am able to accelerate hard up over certain highrise overpasses in overdrive that in the past I could only maintain speed over. I know I shouldn't have but I layed rubber from a few stoplights. My oil pressure is much higher now, hovering around 70 the whole time, dropping to 50 at idle. Temperature remains good, staying at a little over 1/4 with the fan only coming on briefly in heavy stop-and-go traffic. All in all, I am pleased with my new-found power and after a few hundred more miles I am going looking for that kid in the Civic with the coffee-can muffler that humiliated me several months back. After a complete break-in (if I don't break it first), I will bring it in to have it dyno tested. Better than Viagra.

Alan, I had some head work done to get the compression up and installed a fast steet cam, all to compliment work I had done earlier.

You've got pretty much the same setup that I've got now. Do you have a lightened flywheel? If not, that mod alone is pretty amazing. I love trying to corrupt other TR owners. I now find it almost impossible not to hit higher revs when I run through the gears. The car was fun when it was stock... now it's just awesome!

I had the old girl out today with my four year old. It was warm enough to have the top down. I love days like this.

An interesting story that happened today. As part of our little ride today, my son (Ethan) and I stopped off that the local Lowes store. On our way out Ethan commented on how far out I had parked, to which I explained to him about people hurting the Triumph by opening their doors and hitting it. After I had buckled him in, a man in a small pickup truck pulled up two parking spots away and started asking me questions about the TR. Ethan, gotta love him... he started yelling at the man to get his car away because he was WAAAY too close!

That's cute, Shannon. My youngest son is 22 and he still worries about where I park. Thank goodness my insurance company won't let anyone with less than 10 years driving experience drive the car (American Collectors).
No, I haven't lightened the flywheel. The way my clutch was acting yesterday, I may well be changing it out soon. I have the TRF Magic Clutch. I will pop the flywheel and have it refaced with a new ring gear. I lost a tooth somewhere down the road and every 20th crank I end up on that **** (darn) tooth. Really sounds nasty and not good for my starter (gear reduction Japanese). The real kicker yesterday was actually accerating up those overpasses at a noticeable clip, something I could never do before. The exhaust note is quite different as well, a lot more of a raspy growl. Ya gotta love it...

I have the LUK clutch/PP with the Gunst T/O bearing. No complaints yet with 3000 semi-hard miles. The clutch action is a little hard, but not overly so. Since the Gunst spins all the time, you can faintly hear it spinning between the gears, it's kinda neat actually.

My next project might be a 5 speed tranny and a steel or alloy flywheel. But I haven't completely decided yet. I'm actually torn between adding an overdrive or the 5 speed. Either way, it's about the same cost. I would only use the overdrive on the highway, so I don't think I'd be too hard on it. But then a 5 speed would solve many of the other issues that I hate about the current tranny... like leaks and the clutch setup is still marginal at best.

Shannon, I added the J-Type overdrive to my 4-speed and have no complaints. I cruise at 70 mph turning 2300 rpm. Don't know what my rearend ratio is, must be pretty low.
Am running fairly "short" tires, Michelin 205/70R15 Hydroedge, which seem to be about 3/8 shorter than most tires in this size. When I added the overdrive, my speed was all off (John Esposito still doesn't know why) so I sent my speedo off to Nisonger to have it rebuilt and calibrated (using the measured distance/watch the turning cable trick) so I know it is dead-on.
