Update on Bret's MG Skunk Works EFI project

Well, the replacement cat finally arrived.

Magnflow PN#50004 good for up to 3.0L engines and cheaper than the origenl.

As you can see it is scientifically smaller than the old stock cat and could be tucked just about anywhere in the exhaust. But for efficiency I’m going to try to put it right after the collector of the 3-1 header so it should heat up & start doing it’s job faster.

Thirty years of technology - better all around. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Have you considered having the header and cat ceramic coated (like the Jet Hot coating, for example)?

Re: Update on Bret's MG Skunk Works EFI project

I was actually going to have the header coated (haven't decided what kind yet) and have flanged fittings attached to the header's collector pipe & to both ends of the cat for ease of servicing.

But I didn't know you could coat the cat?

Re: Update on Bret's MG Skunk Works EFI project

JetHot is probably the best way to go. If I'm not mistaken, JetHot coats the header inside and out...

hard to believe that itty bitty cat is as effective as a full sized cat... ain't technology wonderful? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Uh, Rob, coating the inside of the cat would be rather counter-productive, wouldn't it? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I recon when the time comes I'll find out for sure one way or the other. But according to Magnaflow - it should be good for any engines up to 3.0L.

Inspecting the honeycombed element inside between the two - the smaller one's seems to run the length of the wider part of the cat. While the old one seems to be two or three elements spaced about a half inch between one another.

That and it's supose to be freer flowing too. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Hey my phone is more powerful than the first computer I ever owned…why shouldn’t it be the same for cars? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
