unusual starter noise

The rarely heard noise is very much like a car turning over, starting and running, all smooth as glass.

THE "NEW" STARTER IS INSTALLED AND RUNNING PERFECTLY! YEEHAA!!!!

OK - I'm trying to calm down. Here's the scoop: Finally got the shims from Moss this morning. Took them out to the replacement starter ... and discovered they don't fit! The shims in the Moss catalog are for the *later* starter, not the bullet nose. Moss catalog should tell you that, but doesn't. Actually implies the shims fit both the early and the late starters. Trust me - the ones I got don't fit the early bullet nose starter.

So figuring not much else could possibly go wrong (yeah, right), I installed the replacement bullet nose starter I got last week from Yankee Auto Electric in Pawtucket. No shims.

Put the plugs, cables, carb linkage, etc. back in place (I was praying a LOT while doing that), reinstalled the battery (was charging all day), and gave it a shot.

Turned over perfectly. No weird sounds, no grinding, no tiny flecks of steel coming loose. Hadn't started the engine in over two weeks. Took about 10 tries with choke fully engaged and no firing at all (even tho' I had primed the fuel pump). On the eleventh try, engine fired once. Twelfth try, engine fired smoothly, and slowly moved up to 1200rpm. What a *beautiful* sound.

I'm a happy camper. Thanks to ALL of you guys for your help on this, my first TR3A adventure. I'm absolutely sure everything will work perfectly from now on! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

Time for a G&T! C'mon snow - MELT!

Next time that I stop over, you can take me for a ride!

Congratulations!

Thanks for the tip about the shims... I had no idea they were different between the 2 starters, I guess I've never seen them side-by-side or even both in the same 6 month period.

Good on you, Tom!

Well done Tom. I'm glad to hear it is going. Funnily enough my TR3 goes through the same start-up procedure. Must be normal!

Nick - you're up kinda late eh? Thanks for sending those positive vibes!

Yes - really happy now that she's running again.

So from a cold start you have to give it many many cranks before the engine comes to life? I just thought it was my choke cable possibly not being adjusted to full "out".
