I've read that the diesels help only if more "umph" is required but also, the Westinghouse Air Brake System is pretty sophisticated and as such the computerized controls are in the diesels.
An additional interesting thing...the tender holds no coal. Big Boy gets its water converted to steam by oil. The tender was fitted with a very large tank.
 
We have the 611 engine here.They put (in my opinion) an ugly design
on the sides commemorating USA's 250th anniversary.
It just looks tacky on a majestic engine like that.

The diesels CAN provide some extra motive power if needed (probably really unlikely) but in addition to providing modern brake control/communications capability they can also generate the large amounts of electrical power for the rest of the train needs.
 
I'm a bit late on the uptake here, but the Big Boy rolled through less than 2 miles from my house, on my 50th birthday. You have no idea how hard it was for me to set that up! What a sight! And the Tunkhannock viaduct was in part designed by a native of my town, Hull Botsford. He was a brilliant young architect working for the DL&W when they sent him to Europe to study architecture and new methods of using reinforced concrete. He booked passage home on a brand new ocean liner...... the Titanic.
 
Tomorrow it's the Horsehoe Curve near Altoona, Pa. Viewing is by reserved tickets only...sold out.

Juniata shops were in Altoona. Any mention of homage as 4014 goes by? That shop has a great history as well.

Big Boy recently went through MO and there were a bunch of videos on FB. What are the two diesel locomotives being used for?

I watched some videos on that a year or so ago (so memory may be fuzzy), but I believe they said the diesel locos were there to provide electrical power to the passenger train (BigBoy was built for freight service so doesn't have the kind of electrical generating capacity a modern luxury passenger train requires) and the diesels also have the modern train tracking/positive train control/braking/communication systems that are legally required to operate on a mainline railway in 2026.
