No not the gas pedal caught under the carpet kind.

I think my problem is a stuck float but thought I would check with you folks first.

The car is equipped with a 3 Weber DCOE45 carb setup. This morning I fired her up and while idling and with my foot off the accelerator pedal, the RPMs started to gather rather quickly. At around 4000 I killed the ignition and tried again. Same thing. With the hood up fiddling with the throttle linkage had no effect. After looking at my Weber manual for a while, I tried again and the problem seems to have disappeared. I am reluctant to take her on the road in case it occurs again in a traffic situation.

Any thoughts, as always, would be appreciated.

Your problem isn't a stuck float, it's a sticking throttle, actually probably the linkage. Look deeper, and trace the linkage all the way from the foot pedal to the carbs.
 
Stuck float would have the engine flooding (loading up on fuel, without the air to go with it) until it stalled out.

I would revisit the linkage, paying particular attention to the rods that keep the carbs in sync.

it is puzzling, as each Weber has its own (internal) throttle return spring.

Please post what you find, as it will benefit any future searchers on the subject.
