Uninspired...

Just got back from our big event of the year, the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede, and feel like crud... Spent a good chunk of the day there and was absolutely uninspired with my photography all day... Feeling like a complete failure right now, and like I had a lack of focus today (no pun intended)... Just crawled back into the house, don't even feel like looking at my photos... A complete waste of my $16 today, and I've blown a once in a lifetime opportunity... *sigh*

That's nuts! Sounds like they dropped the ball not you.

Besides, if you haven't looked at them yet how do you know they suck?

Dude listen, being a good photographer isn't a once in 100 year thing. If you are...you are and if you're not...you're not.

Bottom line, I've seen your work and you have talent.

Even Picaso had a bad day.

One thing I've noticed is my "bad" work is what everyone likes. You may not have seen what you wanted to, but that doesn't mean you didn't capture something someone else will just love.

In the car business there is a saying, "There's an arse for every seat." The same thing applies in art, "There is an eye for every piece."

You didn't fail to be inspired, the world failed to inspire you....and that aint yer fault.

Do you know what that means as an artist?

It means you are growing. You find mudane the shots tourist trip over themselves to take, reserving yourself for only the truly specatular. Spectacular doesn't happen everyday, however; it certainly happens more than once in a hundred years.

You need to rejoice over this. Besides, the best art come through emotion. Where we lack in spoken word wE speak to the world through art. You need to tranfer that feeling to film. Mine is anger. Pi$$ me off and I'm commin' out with somethin' you've never seen before! Channel those emotions. That's what seperates artist from pedestians....and phographers from tourists.

Dude, I just looked through your stuff.

You already GOT the 100 year shot subliminaly and don't even realize it yet!

If you say so... :smirk:

Post the pic on the first page of the cowboy leaning agianst the garbage can and I'll explain it tomorrow. I'm too tired right now and going to bed.

James,

You have a gift (of photography) - don't be so hard
on yourself.
Stand back....take a breath.

I think he means this one here... It was taken earlier in the week and not at the grounds...

Yes, that one. It doesn't matter if it was earlier this week as it's still part of the festival. It doesn't have to be the day of...and what, needs to be taken by midnight or else it turns into a pumpkin? :jester:

I'll explain later when I have more time. I gotta go right now.

Hehehe.. I like how all the dudes with cowboy hats are under the sign that says "West"

Briefly:

The stampede trail 100 years later...now paved

The lonesome cowboy....on his cell phone...leaning against a symbol of our now disposable society (ever seena trash can in ia western?)

The chuckwagon now...serving up the only way we ever see cattle first hand these days...on the bun.

A place now so foreign to what it is trying to celebrate, that it has to be defined by the WEST sign on the right to make sure you know what we are talking about. If it was still the west, ya wouldn't have to say it.

I love it, it has everything. It's quite literally the 100 year shot. It's has all the major factors past and present. The only way it could be better if there was an Indian casino in the background.

I won't even go into the only nature ( the small trees) that you can see are inprisoned by cast iron and concrete.

Great shot, well done!

Thanks Billy... Just got back in from being out for the day, you're reading way more into this photo then I even thought of... :smirk:

You had me at the lone cowboy talking on his cell phone....

Now totally off topic, spotted this car in the same spot this morning...

7578744712_f944c15397.jpg

Talked to the owner of the car (who also owns the food trailer), it's a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL with a body kit, the car itself is entirely stock aside from the body modifications...

Now there's a horse of a different color.
BTW, Billy is about the best person I've ever (virtually) met for finding symbolism in things the rest of us miss.
No wonder hes a good artist.
Just like how you take stunning photographs Sherlock. Even the "uninspired" ones you share always have an element to them that draws you in.

I hear a lot of Pulitzer Prize winning photos were taken by chance.

Art is the ability to take mundane everyday things and say something with them.

Thanks Ben but I don't consider myself an artist. I'm a guy who turns various forms of crap into things... or turns various things into crap. :hammer: :jester:
