Unemployed again

It's almost impossible to get a bad reference from an employer. As an example, I know that all our HR department will confirm are employment dates.

They aren't allowed to even mention that someone was fired, and won't give references of any sort for fear of the good old 1-800-lawsuit.

So you might as well set the bridge on fire and stand on the other side pouring gas on it...

Yep....Most companies will only confirm dates of employment these days.....because of the potential for lawsuits!

16 years ago my husband's company called all the route drivers into the home office and claimed they had "cheated" the company out of money (they hadn't..long story) anyway they gave them the choice of resigning or being fired. If they resigned they would get a plane ticket home, if not....
My husband resigned. I was furious with the way the company had done this...this wasn't right! This was coersion...etc. I felt we should get a lawyer.... My husband told me don't worry. Two weeks later, he had a new job with another company for twice as much pay, better benefits and ALOT more respect. I'm not sure the new job would have happened had we been focused on litigation against the former employer. (Which by the way was just liquidating and was out of business by the end of the year)
Looking forward and not to "revenge" was definitely in our best interest.

Thanks for the thoughtful answer to this situation. Lawsuits are one of the main problems of today's society. Having run a business for over 30 years, that threat was one of the reasons I retired early, before someone decided to sue me over a petty item.
This is great advice...

The situation keeps getting stranger. The CEO of the facility is actually an employee of a management firm hired by our city. The board of directors is an advisory panel only, and has no authority over operations. I have started the grievance process, don't expect anything, and learned that the CEO has a clause inserted that he can negate the process at any time. Seems the CEO is accountable to no one locally, only he firm that he works for. I can't believe that our local government would allow a situation where there are no checks and balances. Thanks,

I have seen management make it so miserable for D.O.D. employees that they got so disgusted they up and quit. As I stated before it is almost impossible for a boss to fire a D.O.D. employee. As I have seen with my very own eyes, the reason this was done by management was to make room for one of thier "kronies"!
I suspect that this is the scenerio in your case.
My last boss tried this tactic on me! I was the only caucasion employee in our shop, the rest {Boss included} bieng of "Other" ethnicity. This job bieng in South Texas I`ll leave it to your imagination to guess which. They often spoke thier native language in my presence when they didn`t want me to know what the subject was, {little did they know that I, originaly bieng from Southern Ariz. knew exactly what they were conversing about.} *SMILE*. Fortunately for me there were other options before contacting an attorney in the D.O.D. {E.E.O. M.E.R. {management employee relations} and the Union}. The outcome of my action at least let them know that they had to be very careful about what was said and in what language around me, and it also let them know that I {as well as upper Management and the union know they were "gunning" for me, and that I was willing and able to obtain legal counsel if need be. This curtailed the bosses actions somewhat for a short period of time but didn`t do much to ease the stress level on my part. They did try to make it miserable enough that I quit but NO CIGAR! {not my style} As I stated before I enjoyed the time I spent out of his presence in the sunshine policing ciggie butts for Wayyyyyyyy more money than the grounds keepers were making!
Moral ..... you CAN make a purse out of a sows ear!

Been there, done that. I had several letters of appreciation from people I provided support for and actually worked hard to do my job and earn my pay. Those that just showed up and filled space had no problems. Bought 300 acres and went back farming instead.
