My car (still) uses positive ground, so the ground strap on the driver side is connected from body to positive post, and the hot cable on passenger side runs from the negative post to the solenoid. Disconnect is on the negative post.

IMO, it's OK.

Usually, the disconnect is on the ground side; as that's just a tiny bit safer. With it on the hot side, in theory, you still might drop a wrench (or whatever) between the body & the battery terminal, creating a short. But with the disconnect on the ground side, shorting the body to either terminal won't create a short.

But as you've no doubt discovered, the battery posts & clamps are different sizes; and the disconnect may not fit as well on the ground side.
 
Believe me guys - if I can do it, you can.

Don - I've still got the "hole patch" to go, but the correct heater valve knob is on the way, and I just made the float vent pipes.

That looks amazing. Well done. My engine compartment was painted by the previous owner, but he didn't prepare it well so the paint is pealing off. There are also a number of scratches and stains on the original paint underneath. Between you and Dale, I am really being put to shame with my scruffy car. Maybe I will have to move to the new forum that is being suggested!
