Under Attack

Just FYI, our server is under attack! In just the past 15 minutes I have received over 150 brute force login attempt notifications. They are coming from all over the globe! Just a heads up that the server may go down due to my server management folks investigating.

I'm naรฏve but why do they do it to this group? Do they want names, addresses? Or is it just that they don't know what's inside?

[Or is it that the Chinese want to more about British cars? :excitement: ]

It it likely not a targeted attack, but an automated attack. If the miscreants know what software you're running (the forum software) they can try a variety of things to get in -- and can also just try to brute force their way in.

It would be unlikely they'd really want anything from the BCF (other than server-side access). But if they can get in it gives them another compromised system they can use to attack other places.

This particular attack is not against the forum software (although that happens also), rather they are trying to get server access

From all over the globe? So it's not from one IP address? Would that mean it's not something carried out by one single person/group/entity?

It could be one group. If they have enslaved servers around the world, they could command those servers to attack anything.

Exactly. They hijack servers from all over and launch coordinated attacks usuall all automated.

With a site like this it's probably more about practicing techniques and generally annoying everyone associated with it than anything else.

Technology will prove to be the downfall of this country - and maybe other countries too. Our military is vulnerable to cyberattacks. We used Stuxnet on Iran - what makes you think a similar virus won't be used on us. And don't forget - many, if not all of our computer chips are made in China. That China. Two guys just wrote a book about this. I heard them on NPR this am. Scary stuff.
