When I was undoing the last part of the rear suspension,1 side only. I forgot to support the rear axle. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif When it thunk to the ground the rear of the drive shaft doesn't look right.I think something broke. Yikes! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cryin.gif

But more important that you weren't in the *wrong* spot when it thunked.

Just talked to Woody and he says
"I warned you to put a jack under the rear so the brake lines don't get stretched"
Dang,I think the lines are now the worst of my worry!
 
Not familiar with this cars drive shaft. What broke?
 
I have a question for those who might know. On my car both the rear trailing and radius arms had bolts with UNF threads . Is this correct?
 
Just found the info. It is normal. Why they change some of the threads when they made these cars? Where they burning up old stock.Anybody know.

Not sure about the thread issue, but hopefully someone will pitch in.

The prop shaft has CV-type joints rather than U-joints. One of the "charming" aspects of the cars' design. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Now might be a good time to pick up one of TSI's or Woody's special driveshafts with U-joints. Or have one made up locally.

Don, when those things were built there was a real "movement" to "go metric" as the universally accepted fastener standard... it failed miserably. And now we suffer the teething problems of the transition. SAE ~should~ be what you find on the driveline components.

I will say i agree with Mickey: Get a modded driveshaft with U-J's and lose the CV's: They're too 'fiddly'. It'd have scatter'd sooner than later anyhoo. At least with U-joints ya have a bit of a warning before they let go, too.

May well be. But this is one "Might-as-well" that really makes sense. I'm planning to change mine out, maybe before going to VTR this summer. Hate to have it self-destruct on the road!
 
Was just on the big "2" sites. Put a call into Ted to see what it takes to enlarge the pinion flange holes. Got some other things to talk about too.

as much as you are spending on the suspension, adding a uprated drive shaft would make sense. It did to me.

is real familiar with the prop shaft. I am going to bring it to them and check on a price to reproduce with U joints. Also will check on the price for aluminum.
