Ok, so I've been back and forth with this tow guy for a couple weeks trying to meet him about a TR6 he ended up with....I finally got out to look at it and it's better than what I was expecting....Factory hardtop(painted black)in nice condition, car is red with a very amature paint job, interior is complete, but the floorboards have been cut out. The rear corner by the tail light on one side has completely rusted away(nothing left at all), the frame has been patched, the engine compartment is SPOTLESS as is the engine itself which leads me to believe the engine was recently rebuilt.....Keys are still in the ignition and I bet I could get it running in an hour or so. It's also got a nice looking roll bar....The car looks like someone was in the early stages of restoration(starting with the engine compartment) and gave up....It was last registered in 1999. I can have the car for $500, now my questions is; is this worth my effort?....I really don't want this thing sitting on my driveway all winter, if I parted it out how quickly would it disappear?

BTW: There is no title for this car

DEFINATLY worth $500. Especially if the engine can be made to run.... Heck, you can probably flip the hardtop for $500 and have a "free" TR6....
~edit~
Oof- You posted the title thing while I was typing- That's a big downer, but not the end of the world...
I'd still be seriously considering it

I am definatly considering it....I want that top....even if I kept the top, I'll definatly have at least one more 6 at some time and a factory hardtop would be sweet....The tow guy won't sell the top seperatly....so it's all or nothing. But if I part the car out a title doesn't really matter...and after forking over $1000 to the DMV people just the other day for taxes and various other b.s on my last purchase I wouldn't mind completely avoiding the place with no title.

How long it takes to unload is a matter of luck. If you find some one who is looking for a specific part, such as a possibly rebuilt engine, you can unload the whole thing for more than you will pay.
If you part it and sell on ebay, you will make a lot more profit, but it could take a long time and a lot more work, and you would have to deal with customs.
Depending on the year, some of the parts can be valuable. I saw where an NOS toggle wiper switch sold for nearly $108.00 last night.
Or you could always use it as lawn art.

I am really gunna have to think about this.....I was able to sell some parts from my last 6 on ebay pretty quickly for a good amount, and there is a very nice TR6 I've had my eye on for a few years that the owned is finally starting to get ready to sell...So I'll probably need the parts. What I don't need is the lawn art, I live in a community where that kinda stuff would land me a nice fine. I was wondering how quickly I could get it torn apart, the interior is easy, fenders shouldn't be too bad, then it's just pulled the motor...Lift the shell and salvage anything useful under there....Doesn't sound to bad, but does everything ever go as easily as it *should*?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

It surprises me, by your description, that some areas of this are intact while other areas sound like they got hit with a ray gun. For $500.00 you've gotta think that a TR Service shop would be itching to get this for parts. I'd jump on it ASAP

If I did not already have a hardtop and did not live in California, I would do it. Take the car.

Hi,

The top by itself is worth the 500 bucks if you ask me. If there was a car like that around here, I'd jump on it!

Todd

P.S if you change your mind about the top let me know.

That pretty much sums it up nicely.

rooster, I'll let you know about the top, if I decide against buying the car I'll pass the info on to anyone interested....It isn't advertised, just sitting on the steet with a sign and the tow guy tells me he's had no real interest. I told him $500 is fine, but I also said need a couple weeks to find a place to park it....

Somtetimes you can get a title through the towing company by going through the lien process. The towing company takes ownership through the courts through non payment of storing changes. You take the letter to the DMV and get a title. Beware I've never dome this, but had a 1980 Spitfire offered to me for around $100 once under those exact same circumstances. It had OD trans and would actually drive, but had been rolled over. Only damage was the windshield frame and top frame were bent. I passed because I had nowhere to store it except outside and my daughter was getting married. You know, no dead cars in the yard when the new family comes by.

Here in Wisconsin a vin# can be submitted for title. If the initial current owner search does not turn up someone a temporary type title is issued. The actual owner can claim the vehicle within the next 5 years.
Not sure what happens if the vehicle is parted out and the owner appears.
On the otherhand. Like Billspit said, the tow and storage company can make a quick claim on the vehicle and gain legal ownership and a title against their costs and charges.
I know this because I was in that position with a TR4 and no title and did some checking with the DMV.
The bottom line is that here, at least, there is an owner somewhere that could step forward at most any time.

See, thing is I am not positive this is a legit tow yard.....I mean they got tow trucks and stuff, but alot of old cars lurking in the shadows of the yard- and not the kinda cars people would just let be towed....a black 65 Corvette coupe with fuel injection, 69 Camaro, 1940's Cris craft boat, and I am sure alot more if I looked around.

Doubt it...I pretty much called every repo yard in Ontario during my pickup search......This is probably more of a "If we like it we'll find a reason to tow it" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif yard

TR6's are easy to break apart. With rust, it may take a little longer. It depends on how much care you want to take in removing fasteners. Seatbelt anchor bolts will probably snap off, along with others, unless a lot of care is taken.
If you take time to inventory, package, label, and clean parts, you could have a full time job going for a while.
I would be throwing out some feelers to your car buddies who might want your leftovers. Take what you want and roll the rest to the next 'scavenger'.

Hi R6MGS,
Seems like there are 2 possibilities here.
1) By some very uncertain chance this car belongs to you.
2) This car belongs to someone else.

The thing that would concern me is what might the "someone else" do if he/she finds out where it is and what you are doing with it? What would you do, I know what I would do.

I wonder if that possible person reads this forum?

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif good point...I am gunna reall have to think about this, thanks to eveyone for your advice...I'll let you know what happens
