VW data breach. Why aren't there monetary fines against the companies that are ~supposed~ to keep safe the personal data they force you to provide?

They were smart enough to hide the software in their diesel cars but not smart enough to keep customers data safe.
My daughter's jetta is on the 5th coil pack. No VW for me.

VW is corporate, so they operate like most big companies looking to save every dime. So what they can't sell to the public, like internal systems, they skimp on and hope holes aren't found. But the hackers and crooks are getting cleverer and cleverer, and with the net they can operate from around the world rather than needing to be there like the old days. Personally there's things I would not connect to the net and tell customers that is the price of enhanced security.
