Type A overdrive

Still working on my overdrive (waiting for parts really) I took the oil drain plug off yesterday and found three magnetic rings in there. I know what they are because they are listed in the Moss Catalog. However I found no reference to them in any of the shop manuals or in any of the articles I glommed off the internet. Or in the Volvo Manual that Randall sent me. Of the three that came out of my unit. one was flat, one was cupped and one was cupped and oval shape. My understanding that they should all be flat.

Big question of the day is do I really need them? Specially since there is no reference to them in any of the literature that I have.

You thoughts would be greatly appreciated, Tinkerman

I have three small but very powerful magnets that are in the large drain plug of my "A" type overdrive. I have them in the cup of the drain plug and not inside the mesh screen basket strainer. In fact they are held in place magnetically (radially oriented) to the hex head of the small bolt that secures the strainer basket.

There is no mention of these in any Triumph books or manuals. I decided this myself about 18 years ago as I was doing my restoration. It doesn't matter what shape they are as long as they fit and collect any black bits that can be attacted and held by the magnets.

I suggest that you put them back in.

I agree with Don (always have) that you should replace the magnets. At the end of your first season with the A type, drain and refill with 30W Non Detergent. Wash the magnets in solvent and you will be amazed at the swarf that it accumulated. I drain and refill every two years as part of maintenance.

Mine are somewhat warped as well; I don't see that it has any impact on their function so I've never worried about putting in new ones.

I believe they were a later addition, by Laycock, so not shown in the TR3 manuals nor originally found in the earliest OD units. But they are a very good idea, IMO. In fact, I also use a magnetic plug in the main gearbox drain plug, as well as the engine sump drain plug.

Even though it's also my belief that using better quality oil will result in less swarf on the magnets :jester:

PS, they are shown in later factory manuals. P/N 513205 I believe is all three magnet rings. Available from TRF for $23.

Thanks fellows, from the amount of swarf that I found on them I suspect that it is a very good idea. I will just put them back, warts and all.

Cheers, Tinkerman

"Type A" would be more geared for "The British Psychiatric Forum".

Doug, my experience over the last 4 years of rebuilding this dude from the ground up supports your theory 100%, but I love it anyway!!!!!!
