Ok
Its completed,
let me tell ya, I couldnt belive it was the same car with the extra gear in it...

Instead of winding the engine up in 4th @ 3500 rpm's doing 65 mph
now 2700 rpm's to do 65 mph in 5th gear.

(((I LOVE IT !!)) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

That's a very good reduction and is about the same as the overdrive that I had installed last year. It makes crusing a pleasure. Enjoy..........

Any pictures?

That's a very nice reduction. What size tires are you running?
The reason I ask is that in my old TR6 I remember thinking the RPM was half the speed. Not literally, there were some zeros I eliminated. But at 70 it was turning 3500. This was with the stock 185 tires (or should I say tyres?)
Anyway the other night I took the TR to the local club meeting. At 70 MPH I was turning around 3200 maybe 3300. At 3600 or 3700 I was showing 80 mph. My tires are 215/65/15 on a 6X15 rim. I may need to break out the calculator and tape measurer to determine the difference between my redlines and the Dunlops on the KN wheels.

I would love to install a five speed. Which one did you install?

Bob,

I upgraded my tires from the Redline 185/15 to Goodyear 205/70/15 and took special note to recored the rpms before and after. As I posted above, I stay right with the 5 speed numbers and my speed/rpm numbers did not change with the tire swap.

Actually, I'm at 2700rpm at 70 mph and at 83-85 I hit 3000 rpm. Speedo error from tire chart could account for difference, since it's off about 1 mph at 60.

According to the Miata sizing page that I grabbed here, the 205 is just a tiny bit bigger than yours, which would be an exact profile to the 185/75/15.

Save the calculator work, here is the link: https://miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Paul- Nice site. Will save for future references

Glad you liked it. It saved me a bunch of calculating. I just wish I could have talked better half into new wider wheels, but then after everything else I've done this year, I'd be stupid to complain.

I was just wondering what the rear diff. ratio is in your six and what the new drive ratios are that the new five speed creates.

Supposedly they were in the '78' range. not quite 75 or 80 but in between. Early years of radials and all that.

Thanks Shawn. I didn't get to answer VD. Too busy frustrating myself on a golf course. Should have worked on the TR instead.

I had the Ford type 9 5 speed installed

the numbers may vary due to the fact I have yet to recalibrate my speedo... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

I was told that the 1st gear was quite a bit different on the Ford transmission (lower). Did you notice any difference in 1st gear vs the Triumph gearbox?

I was thinking of getting a Toyota 5 speed for this reason, but I suspect the Ford would be easier/cheaper to find.
Thanks-Ron

I cant speak for the Toyota trans., but the Ford (type 9) does not seem to have any different ratio than the stock 4 speed untill you get to 5th then its 0.875. As far as avaliblity, I know that they are both avalible. I dont think the Ford is cheaper than the Toyota.
Your best bet is to contact John at Quantum Mechanics for prices on the Ford. I'm sure someone here can direct you towards a contact for the Toyota 5sp.

I'm very satisfied with the Ford tranny, John did an excellent job, I do advise you contact him soon if your planning on having him do the job this winter, I know he's very busy and booking up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

No problem... A bad day golfing is better than a good day working. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

I just got the Toyota trans kit from Herman at HVDA. If you go on Herman's site, he has a gear ratio table of the various Celicas and pick-up trucks comparing them to the original TR boxes. The kit goes for $1485 now. Not cheap, but it's nicely engineered. He has it so you can use you original shifter. I picked up a used Toyota box for $200. They can be had for as little as $125 if you shop around. They're pretty much bullet-proof, so I would guess that's why they're so cheap. Nobody needs them. Several members of our club have installed them and are very happy with the conversion.

Edit: The kit from Herman also comes with a hydraulic throw-out bearing and a clutch driven disc, so if you were planning to replace all the clutch goodies while you were in there, you only need to buy the pressure plate.
