Two year old LED/LCD Samsung TV konked out

Not about to go out and get another "new" one.

Power supply in the one it replaced went Tango Uniform, I replaced it for cheap and have that in the garage now. This one has a new logic/display board on the way. Under $40. Could've waited for a restock from another vendor and paid $20... "Instant gratification" was a factor, so only waiting 'til Monday.

I've had old CRT units run for many, MANY years. Is this a "planned obsolescence" thing?!?
 
You never know. My flat screen has run for 16 years now with no issue. But I had one of those 50,000 LED bulbs I needed to replace after 1000 or so as it lost one of the LEDs and that somehow caused it to emit enough interference that the radio and tv got static. So replaced the bulb and went back to normal. I suspect it is less planned as just questionable quality of components/assembly

Had one LED in a track light with two others on it start to wink-n-blink, causing the other two to act weird too. replaced it a couple years ago and all three have been fine since. Strange.

In its defense, the TV's here are rarely turned off. Found a capacitor on the LED board swollen near to popping.
 
Swollen caps used to be a BIG problem in the 2000's - we had classrooms worth of computers reduced to junk by swollen/failed caps - and the helpful people at the warrenty support center were still dutifully going through their script:

Have you turned it off and on again? No - there is yellow goo leaking out of the capacitors!
Have you updated all your drivers? No - there is yellow goo leaking out of the capacitors!
Have you tried reinstalling Windows? No - there is yellow goo leaking out of the capacitors!

Finally took sending a photo of one of the failed boards to them to get any results - to their credit we got all new motherboards within a week...
 
Getting past the "three-ring binder support" bunch has always been an issue.

Were those machines Gateway by any chance? Saw a lot of those with garbage caps back-when.

We have had our Sony Bravia 55" flat screen for just over 10 years now. By today's standards it's ancient technology. It's "only" 1080p but because of the backlight LED technology they used, and picture interpolation, the picture looks as good as most 4k sets I've seen. In fact I like it better than 4k. One downside is that most of the built-in Apps in this "Smart TV" have depreciated. For example, the YouTube app and the Amazon Prime Apps built-in no longer work. It's not a huge issue since we have an Apple TV box that has all of those apps anyway. We have a 3 year old SamSung in the bedroom. No idea how long it will last, but have been pleased so far with the longevity of the Sony. Because the picture quality is more than adequate, I've no immediate plans to replace it with a newer 4k unit unless the Sony finally gives out.
 
I'll say mine is a SamSung, just passed the 16yo mark and still works as good as new. The remote however died around the 8yo mark and I had to get one of those universal ones that I've used since then.

Samsung may be sourcing their newer parts "lowest bidder" now. This one was a 2019-build.

Actually they were Dell machines, but the problem transcended pretty much all brands (and not just computers either). One of my friends worked for a computer component manufacturer during that time frame, and had good insight into the source of the problem. It was just business as usual for the overseas manufacturers...
 
I'd considered getting half-a-dozen replacement caps from Mouser for the TV board but went for the "path of least resistance" (capacitance? 😉 ) instead. May get them anyway, just as exercise in discreet component R&R, to keep a spare board around.

And I feel sorta guilty ordering just a couple dollars' worth of stuff from Mouser...

I bought a couple of caps off of Amazon.... Fixed my garage door opener board. Thirty-three years and still going strong (now)

I found a replacement - there's an RCA
entertainment center on our local craigslist.
