Two Electrical Questions

[ QUOTE ]
Hey Bill,

A buddy of mine on the street used to drop by almost
every day to check the status of the Crypt car. He'd
kinda chuckle with me about the latest PO mess I had uncovered. But my buddy moved away two weeks ago.

I got a call last night from my pal. He was very upset.
It seems he moved his family into a Crypt House. Week No1
the kitchen cabinets fell off the walls due to termites.

Week No. 2 the kitchen sink collapsed and the roof
began leaking into 2 bedrooms.

The PO and his one year warranty?? nowhere to be found.

My buddy has price quotes of $50,000. to correct the PO
hidden disasters. After only two weeks!!

Puts the Crypt Car into perspective.

In my experience orange, or brown is the wire coming out of the stereo that triggers the power antenna.........

Ok, so if that os the case, then that wire going to the clip and ending there is ok (unless it needs to come out of the clip, if the clip is some sort of terminal).

Maybe the stereo is simply bad?

Thanks for all of the info, guys!

Bill, you were right after all; reversing the wires to an ON/OFF switch will not reverse the direction of actuation. Only turning the switch upside doen will do so.

maybe a test ?

Back to the stereo. Most stereos have a ground wire(or they ground by the chassis), hot wire(usualy red, hot all the time), ignition wire(usualy yellow or brown, hot with ignition on), and speaker wires. Sometimes you have an electric antenna wire that is usualy blue. The speaker wires are usually in pairs. Same color, one with stripe. A stereo will have two sets, one grey or white and one set green or other color. Not sure what's going on with yours.
The blue connectors you are seeing are probably taps that clamp on an existing wire and connect to that wire by little knives that cut through the insulation. They are a bad idea. The blue clip on the brown wire probably had another wire with a bullet type connector. This probably broke off(that's why I hate them). This should go to the brown ignition wire with the bullet. That is probably your problem. This would cause your set not to come on. Does the red and brown from the set go to the same clip? If they do, then your problem is between there and the battery, assuming the set works. Use a voltmeter or a test light to see if you have power at that blue clip. If not, you need to trace it up. If you get a light there, check the ground with the light and the set on(ignition on). If the light is lit on the black wire, you lost the ground some where.

Just an update... Phil and I played with the stereo yesterday, and got it running (thanks Phil!). The wiring was pretty FUBAR. We discovered that one of the inline fuses had been blown, and wrapped in tinfoil to bypass it, for instance.

We also discovered that the radio was AM/FM Mono! She sounds like a 35 year old radio, too! A lot of the bass frequences came out like a grinding noise (which I thought was a blown speaker... so we installed the new ones... sounds the same so it's the stereo itself!).

We ran out of time, so we didnt put the new stereo in to replace it (and I was on the fence about that anyway). But I think that's the next step (though I had to modernize the look of the car like that, but dont want to give up space in the globe box, or trunk for the stereo!)

But on the way home from Phil's, I had it on a classic rock station. The first three songs to play as I was driving home were all mid to late 70s songs... rather apropos for a 70s car on a 70s radio! I felt like I was in a time machine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the help on these issues, gents!
