two different front brake calipers...

ok, so i was tearing down the front brake calipers to replace the rubber and now the cylinders due to rust, but i noticed something odd. the exterior half of the front calipers are different. one is a 16pb and the other is a 16p. the inside halves are the same. should i be worried about this? is complete replacement in order?

on a side note, this car has way too many oddities...
 
IIRC I do believe I had two different calipers on the front of my Mk IV parts car. They were generally the same, just different markings. Replacement seals and pistons went into both just fine.
 
Well, maybe. There was a change around March or April 1972. Offhand, I seem to recall that the change involved metric fittings AFTER.

Anyway, one possibility is to get remanufactured calipers from AutoZone/Parts America. They show the earlier ones for $70.99 each and the later ones for $64.99 each ($25.00 core charge either way).

Just a thought....
 
Hi,

Andy is right, the only difference between those two calipers is the metric fittings and bolts on the 16PB. Most likely someone bought a rebuilt caliper at some point and installed it. Many repair shops and auto parts stores might not notice the difference.
 
Your right about the metric, non metric difference. I would be concerned about the brake hose threading being correct.
