turn signals

Yahoo they work... But why. ??
I changed my emegency flasher switch and emergency flasher relay last night, checked all the connections for the flasher bulbs. Then checked the voltage and had 12 volts across 1 green wire at the flasher switch. The signals did not work. I switched on the flasher and only the passenger side lit up, but did not flash. Then while trying to figure this out, the green white wire pulled out of the connector under the dash. AND THEY WORKED?? The emegency flasher does not but all the signals work. If I plug the green white wire back in, I am back to only the right side lighting up, but not flashing when the emergency switch is on. I was confused but happy. Rather have signals than not, and who needs emergency flashers, they just waste precious battery power. So today I drive to work happy with turn signals, but when I get here a coworker who followed me in says "hey your passenger rear tail light is out". Oh OH, thats green white I say to myself....ELECTRIKIME...gotta love this stuff. NOT !

Sorry just checked my wire diagram,,,green purple is the tail light, I must have lossened the right side last night ( I hope) I will check a noon time. But what is the loose green white wire for and why when disconnected does everything work re turn signals??

the green and white activates all the blinkers on that side i believe....same on the other side but different colors...
red wires are hot and will be ur running lights...most tail lights are grounded by their connection to the body...
make SURE your switches are plugged correctly...my hazard was off a notch and everthing was wacko!....more info ltr..zimmmy

woodie - given your wiring issues, would it be feasible to just get a new harness? Drew had the links to a reasonably priced kit. Would probably lower your blood pressure dramatically!

Site sponsor https://www.britishwiring.com will set you up. Probably the best thing I did when I bought the car. Not the cheapest in $$, but the time and headache savings were massive. At least now I know what's going on from a wiring standpoint, and can only blame myself if it is not working. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

id rather fix the tail lights than rewire EVERYTHING!.be positively sure ur have the proper wiring diagram..
..although a new harness would be
nice, i think itd be slightly more tedious to rewire
a 74 than a bugeye, droo ; ) ..zzmmmy

OK, I know you guys are all well meaning, But like I said, the turn signals work, the brake lights work, the headlights work, the marker lights work, the license plate lights work, the wipers work, the radio works , all the guages work and so on, the only thing not working is the emergency flasher, oh and the mystery green white wire that is dosconnected.

So tell me, aside from having it perfect, why to do I need to buy a new harness?

I am not doing a concourse restoration.

No flaming, no bad feeelings, I am just curious why all this electical stuff works when there is a green white wire disconnected, or when it is the turn signals stop.

I love my litte car, SPARKY, and you guys have been great, and I think the car would be still in a garage if you guys had not helped... and I have had a few beer now,

The real benefit for me is that I now know for certain that the car is wired exactly like the diagram says it should be (unlike my old Land Cruiser I had 10 years ago, that I "fixed" by running bits of electrical cord around the factory harness and using lots of scotch-lock connectors, what a mess). Eliminates the DPO and narrows problems down to a DCO only (Dumb Current Owner) Of course, this is on a Bugeye, and there are only a handful of electric bits on the car at all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As far as your mystery wire, I'm assuming you've traced it with a multi-meter and found where it goes? Even on a later Spridget there can't me that many places it could end up.

So... I looked at the wiring diagram for your car and here is what I came up with. The green white wire goes to the right hand signal lights. But it is wired such that the RH lights can get power from either the hazard switch or the turn signal switch. So, I would reccomend the following.

1) Check the bulb and the ground for the right rear light.

2) Check that all wires on your hazard switch are connected to the correct post. I will try to check mine tomorrow and let you know how they are hooked up.

3) Buy a coupla cheapo two-prong flasher units from your local parts store. I was having all kinds of funky problems with my signals that went away when I replaced the flasher unit. There is a seperate flasher unit for the signal and the hazard switches.

IMHO, replacing the wiring harness is only needed in the most extreme cases. I think yours is probably a very simple problem.

Thanks for the input, I have not checked the gren white to see where it goes, but all other things I have checked and got working are per th wirediagram. I know the bulb and ground are good, cause they work, I wired the hazard switch per the 6 pin diagram (5 wires) and installed a new hazard switch and flasher realy. The turn signal flasher relay works ( cause the signals work. The hazard switch is wired like this

1 green
2 green
3 green white (disconnected)
4 empty
5 green red
6 light green brown

The green white wire goues to a single connector in the centre of the dash then to a four wire split to the lights and column switch

On my switch, looking at the switch from the front, the green white is on the upper right pole. The green wires are on the bottom two poles.

Morris,, hmm looks like this for my diagram

Okay. Yours has a different switch than my car. My mistake.

As I understand the wiring diagram one of the green wires is hot, and the other goes to the turn signal switch. The green/white wire goes to the hazard flasher and then to the RH lights. I think. I am going on very poor memory here. Anyhow, it seems that the way the switch should work is that when the switch is off, power goes through to the turn switch. When switch is on, power goes to the hazard flasher and is disconnected from the turn switch.

Sooooo... what I am getting at here is that maybe it makes a difference which pole the green wires are attached to. It seems like a long shot, but who knows?

Also, looking in the VB catalog shows that the swtiches changed in 72. I wonder if it is possible that you got a post 72 switch sent to you by mistake. Did you order from Moss? I have had several experiences with them where they sent me the right package containing the wrong part.
